Well I finally gave it up and parked the Valk for the winter. I shut the petcock off pulled the battery and put on the cover. as I was taking the battery down to the basement to put it on the tender I thought to myself how does the digital odometer maintain the mileage ? Is there a internal battery?

I sincerely doubt there's an internal battery. It's most likely a non-volatile memory chip such as a NOVRAM (non-volatile random access memory) or an EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read only memory). Both types are cheap and they've been around since the early 80's. These devices are designed to retain their memory for 10-20 years but are theorized to retain it for greater than 100 years.

Just try putting some chili in there and then top it off with some ice cream.

Let us know how that works.
