Rear rotors - GW and Valkyrie

I have a rotor question. I have 2 rotors. I'm very sure that one rotor is off my Valkyrie rear rim, and the other is off an 92' or 94' (should be the same) Goldwing rear. I didn't mark them, and can only assume which one is which. I was wondering if someone else may be able to help out.

This one the bolt heads are recessed. I feel this is the Valkyrie one.


This one seems like the thickness of the bolt head recessed portion of the other. I say the GW one.


Placing one on top the other, they are the same outside diameter. The six bolt holes match up. Only the multiple holes in the rotor braking surface don't align, but I don't think that matters at all. Other than the min. thickness note, there is only the 5E19 on the "GW" one, but I don't think that is a part # or anything else.

I'll be mounting an Auston Taxi tire on my spare GW rim, and swapping out my MC tire on my ride this winter, so want to place the right rotor on the rim. But I feel either one will work. Wondering if I should us/try the Valkyrie rotor instead, thicker disc should give a little more "support".

Also, more importantly to this forum, I know there has been discussion on using a GL1500 GW front rotors on the Valkyrie, but no talk about the rear rotor being a match also. If what I do have is the Valkyrie and a GW rear rotor, then they are a match.

This might help a little... there's two different kinds of Valkyrie rotors...

one kind: all STDs and Tourers through 99

other kind: everything else, including 99 Interstates



Those numbers on the pictures you posted will probably be enough
for someone to ID that one...

The front rotors are swappable from an 1800 wing, not the 1500 wing.

  I have a rotor off a 98 STD with 7106 stamped in it plus the minimum thickness.
  The bolt heads are the flush mount , not the recessed.
         BTW , if you have a spare rear rotor to part with , please let me know as I am re-doing a 98 standard I bought  to save it . It will be for sale in early spring.

While both may be used, measuring the rotor thickness may tell you something.

correct. all after market rotors are thinner also to match the GL1800 and CBR600 and a few others that use the same rotor which were all thinner than the valkyrie rotors. brake manufactures such as Vesrah (I use) and Ferodo offer thicker pads to compensate.

While thicker pads would seem a good idea, the regular OE valk pads should work just fine, shouldn't they?  (thou maybe not last as long)

Also, I seem to remember reading the thinner GW rotors are rated with nearly the same longevity as the thicker Valk rotors.

OK. With the replies I got, I figured then that the 90'-00" GW rotor and the pre-Valkyrie Interstate rotors where the same.

They are.

I brought up the fiche for the 94' GW IS and the 98' Valkyrie CT, and they have the same rear rotor OEM part number.

It wasn't till the Valkyrie IS showed up, that they thickened the overall rotor, and recessed the bolt heads to match the original rotors, so the bolts don't need to be changed (same length).

Both rotors have the min thickness stamped, of 6 mm. So I would feel they both have the same life expectancy (between the 97'-98' and the 99'-03' rotor). Like the Valk IS yoke being the replacement for the original GW GL1500, seems the same happened on the rear rotor.


If you want a less expensive GW rotor, the 88'-89' rotor has slotted holes and DOES NOT fit the post 90'-03' GW and Valkyries, it is a smaller diameter.

Next will be to measure up my Valkyrie rear rim, and see if the width is the same as my GW. If it is, then I didn't need to buy another car tire, but could have used my GYTT instead (but the Auston seems to be a better choice). Then the front rims too. I still have my IS front wheel.

Wonder what the Valkyrie rims would look like on a GW?
