Starter problem
«
on:

Every once in awhile when I hit the starter, all I hear is the relay click and no starter rotation. I was curious what would cause this. Bad ground connection maybe? Or something worse. It's not hydrolocked so I know that's not part of it. Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the starter button.

It sounds like the common dirty starter switch issue. Like the fellas said, clean it, the relay connections and especially the battery ground where it mounts to the engine by the left foot peg.

Simple things first. How old is the battery? How is the charge, have you checked the connections ....battery and ground? Then the suggestions already given, you should find the problem fairly quickly

If you have never done a starter switch clean up, go to SHOP TALK and read about the starter switch before ya start.
There is some excellent information & cautions in there.
Also information on the plastic sliders in the switch. Thats not really the name of them but I'm old and my memory has failed several times and this is one of them.

so got home yesterday from offshore, went ahead and started to look into the problem. of course first thing i do is check all the hardest repairs first. did the starter switch cleanup first. spent 30 minutes alone just in search of the little spring that decided to fly when i was hooking it back up. finally find it, put her back together same issue. pull the relay plug apart, clean all the connection, add dielectric grease. and the problem still exists. maybe i should go back and read my post asking help on it. hey y'all suggested checking the battery ground first. yep its a lil loose.......so the bike runs again and i guess its a good thing that now i know the starter switch is all shiny and the relay is cleaned up with grease. preventative maintenance right? thank y'all again for the help. its nice to know i can count on this place to help out in a bind.
