Handcuff and search me PLEASE !

Festus Mo. 40 min. south east of St.Louis

I purchased  interstate with a Utopia backrest installed. Now I would like to remove it from the stock interstate seat and install it on my standard. The 2000 interstate has a large single seat ,and the standard has a two piece seat. I didn't have the fun of installing the utopia originally and sure could use some guidance on installing it on a standard seat. It must have come with some instructions that were not passed on with the bike .I am fairly handy but with experiance just a few keys away I would appriciate any measurments or info. Just hate to cut into a good seat blindly.

I may be wrong, but I think they mount using different systems.  Perhaps one of the standard/ touring riders can speak up.  I mounted one on my Interstate, and it was straight forward.

Do you have the link below?   Maybe it will help a bit..

You don't have to cut into the seat for a standard. It just installs between the two cushions, or just behind the solo seat.

I just watched the vidio on Utube I believe you may be correct about not cutting into the seat. Glad I checked in for some help. I won't be doing the install until tommorow. I will still be open to any more input . And thanks for the link.

Just installed one on my tourer last month. No cutting. Bolts to the 2 bolt holes (with new bolts that come with the Backrest) under the pillion.   Wink

The utopia for the Interstate, and the utopia for the Std/Tourer are two different backrests.  The I/S model mounts to the seat itself while the Std/Tourer version bolts to the bike.

I don't think the Interstate version will work on a Std/Tourer.

Yep, I believe you are all correct on the fact that they are different. The lower mounting brackets are different. I emailed utopia and they got back pretty quick with me. They can sell me a lower bracket, with proof that what I own is actually one of thier backrest. 50.00 plus shipping. Thanks for the help everyone. I am a machinist and will now play with the thought of fabbing my own. Now that I see how they mount it shouldn't be to hard.

Yeah $50 plus shipping seems a little steep for what it is.

Utopia will be good enough to send you one of their overpriced mounting brackets after you "prove" you actually have one of their backrests? What sort of "proof" do they require? Notarized statements? DNA swabs? Elitist or what? If someone should steal the backrest from your I/S, easy to do, they won't replace it. You have to buy another whole seat. Just my .02. I'm just sayin.......

I looked back for the reply that was sent to me from utopia, to double check but I already deleted it. To the best of my memory they required  one of the following , original reciept, copy of the reciept from original vendor , or the easiest for me would be a photo of the end of one of the pieces with thier maufacturers mark ? The reason for this was to keep from supplieing people who did not actually have thier back rest with parts that wouldn't work on the competitors product. And I guess I can see somone ordering parts for what they thought was a utopia only to recieve a part that wouldn't work.
