I found a oil leak around the alternator, not much, no dripping but i would like to repair before summer. Is the alt. oring the only seal preventing oil leak from the alternator housing? Interstate '99

To my knowledge yes that is correct.

Yes I also believe it is.  I replaced my alternator in the spring and then my oil problem started.  After 6 months of wondering where the oil was coming from I ordered the $5 O-Ring.  When we pulled the alternator it was obvious that when we installed the new alternator the O-Ring got sliced.  After installing the new O-Ring no leaks.

PS - You don't need to pull the alternator the whole way out to replace the O-Ring.  Just far enough to slip it on.

Some dozen years ago when I installed my Compufire alternator I had to cut the O-ring seal to get the impellor past the case with the tight squeeze between the frame and the engine for the larger Compufire.  Had a small oil leak ever since, even after adding a 2nd O-ring on the fwd face of the alternator.  The oil eventually hurts the alternator, gets on the commutator and brushes I'm thinking.  I just got a 2nd replacement alternator.  Last time I added some JB Weld to help close off the leak - didn't work.  Probably because I used an oil film to keep it from permanently welding my alternator in. So while I'm waiting for some warmer weather to install the new Compufire, I'm considering ways to stop the leak.  I'm thinking of adding Perm-A-Gasket or the like, or adding silicon sealent in the area where I cut the metal out.  Looking for suggestions as well.

I thought it was dry inside the alternator portion of the motor? The o-ring on the alt would be to keep that section clean/dry, not keep oil in.

The oil seal would be on the "shaft" side of the alt drive (the wet side).

No.  There's an oil bath in there.  The O ring is to keep the oil in.
