Newbie here from Jacksonville, fl  Semi retired here after living in Michigan all my life   Just bought a 98 standard with 13000 miles on it and am thinking of installing a Memphis Batwing on it.  I have the quick release Memphis mount kit on my bike now and was wondering if anyone knows if I can install the batwing with this mount or do I have to purchase the trigger lock mount.  They look like the same kit to me except for the trigger so I would think it would work.   Does anyone have any experience with this install?

I studied doing the same thing a couple years back, seems like it would work. I never did do it. Hold on, someone who knows for sure will chime in. Welcome by the way.

Welcome neighbor, Someday I am thinking of this same upgrade, one of our local fellows has the batwing and swears by it. He may not always check the tech board so be sure to visit our Florida Board and ask for Billy Boy, he is quite famous around the world. We have a ride scheduled to Palatka this weekend so maybe consider the ride to meet some of the locals. I work out of Jax, what color is your bike I can keep an eye out for ?

I'm not certain if that mount will work, but in the mean time welcome to the asylum.   2funny

Before you commit to the Memphis Shades Batwing fairing, you might want to take a look at the Woodys fairing.

It's handmade from fiberglass (not plastic like the MS), one at a time specific to our Valkyries.

I love mine.

Happy New Year to everyone,

BF, that fairing really looks good! I really want to put a fairing on my '97 Standard. From what I read on here, the "Woody" is the way to go. I've been to the Woody web site a number of times. I like what I see and read.
What windshield did you go with. I like how it curves up. Do you get good protection from it. Install easy enough? Any info and tips will be appreciated!
That's a beautiful girl you have their!

That Woody Batwing looks very nice, but the price tag is near double.  Really interested in the Memphis setup to be able to install on and off quickly. Anybody got photo's?

The one you see in that pic is a 7" with re-curve.

The re-curve does give extra protection as opposed to a shield with out it.....like adding an extra 2 inches or so.

Install is a breeze.  You can change out windshields literally in less than a couple minutes.  Just loosen the three mounting bolts/nuts (don't take them out....just loosen them some), slide out the old shield, slide in the new shield, tighten the three bolts/nuts....insto presto....changed shields.

When I first ordered my Woodys and talked to Glenn, he told me that a 10" shield is the closest to the OEM windshield....which is what I had on the bike before.  I looked just over the OEM.  It's the same with the 10" shield for me.

A basic/straight (without re-curve) shield is what I ordered with the Woodys (in light tint).  It was pretty good, but I got a tad of buffeting with it....the same as I did with the OEM shield.

I've since bought a bunch of shields to try out.  I have that original 10" straight shield....and I have a 4" basic straight shield in solid black, a 6" with re-curve, a 7" with re-curve, a 10" with re-curve and an 11" with re-curve.

Except for the solid black 4" shield, all of my shields are tinted.

The 11" I don't like....the top of the shield is directly in my line of sight.

Three shields I like and use.  The 4" for when it's hella hot and I want all the wind (it provides no protection...it's just there as a thumbnail)....the 7" for most of the year and the 10" for winter/cool/cold weather riding.

All of my shields are from Fast Aire.

http://www.fastaire.com/

The regular/straight shields they call "Basic" shields.  The ones with re-curve they call the "Aero" shields.

I only know of one other company that makes and sells re-curve shields.....

http://www.longrideshields.com/searchresults.asp?cat=1823

They look like nice shields, but I have no experience with them.

7" shield.....

Apples to oranges.

Full inner and outter fiberglass full fairing with tunes to a cheap plastic outter shell with...nothing.

Fiberglass you can get repaired most anywhere and everywhere if you ever need it.  Plastic fairing...not so much.

True, Woodys is NOT a quick release fairing and is mounted to be permanent....however, I can't ever imagine wanting to take it off now that it's on.

Just depends on what you want.

To answer your question, I had the older style mounts on a MS shield, when I bought my fairing I went to the quick release so I could switch them. I never do switch them, but it is nice to be able to take it off in 10 seconds to clean or work on something.  I leave the fairing non all the time.

I think that you have to buy the mounting kit with the fairing as the brackets are different. The new bracket kit will be the quick release.  If you are wondering if you need to upgrade the old shield with the quick release I would say no you do not, it should still work.

I put the MS Batwing on my Tourer using the fork tube mounted quick release clips, but the mounting hardware for the fairing is different than the windshield's hardware. When you buy the mounting kit from MS, it comes with new clips anyway. if you go the Memphis Shades route, get the lowers as well because. It reduces the buffeting noticeably.

If you don't plan on ever mounting a radio or sound system, the MS is kinder to the budget than a Woody's fairing for sure. Some folks never dismount a fairing once it gets mounted, but I take mine off a few times a year to clean and freshen things up. With a Memphis Shades fairing, no gauge remount is needed. The only interference is with the lowers and the turns signals. Some folks cut out the conflict, I simply slid the signal mounts down the fork tubes about an inch or so. I've had mine for a few years now and I would never go back. I think Billyboy likes his too.

So the quick release will not work with the new fairing?   Memphis shades wrote me back today and said that it will not.  I still don't see any difference between the quick release and the trigger lock except the triggers themselves, but I guess i'll take their word for it   thanks for the responses
