Not that it'll do a whole lot of good, but if anyone would like to write a polite message to the person that sponsored this misguided law, you can do so here:

I would like to add the fact that NO ONE can hold on when your total body weight is jerked in the opposite direction.   Bull riders have been trying for many years.

It appears to me actually improving safety was not the goal of this law, at least not directly. The goal of this law was to put a burden in place to discourage motorcycle riding, especially with a passenger...

couldn't agree more.
and who would be behind this, the insurance companies, vehicle, medical, life etc.,
they just want to collect money and not pay out.
there is a reason insurance companies stocks trade for $400 to $100k per share.
most laws today can be traced back to insurance companies profits.

I think the last post hit the target on the nose.  They, who do not ride, want all that do ride, to suffer for the loss of her daughter. They tend to forget, that all who die, had parents so finding an object to blame is not new.
It was that evil motorcycle that did the harm and her daughter's choice was not a factor. Snell helmet should be required and surfers must where helmets . Golf balls need to be much softer. Same logic where guns kill people. It all rolls down to irresponsibility being promoted and social responsibility exceeds civil rights.  Let stupid voters breed and keep them alive to breed sum more stupid voters.  They are trying to breed the conservatives out of existence.  Think of all the DOT and transportation laws that have been created the past 50 years. Seat belts, DOT lights, Dot Glass, Safety bumpers?   We all needed  the TPMS sensors. Do the new bikes have them?

We need to get all our vender and customer base to start a lobby even at the state level. Lobbyist have more influence than truth or voters.  The itch gets the scratch.

Her daughter may have been using the reach around hold and contributed to the accident.

I have had the seat belt buzzer turned off in my truck. Is this legal?

I say it is legal since is YOUR truck, YOU paid for it.  In one of my former toyota tundras,  I removed the spring clip inside the plastic housing of the seat belt clip which stopped the annoying buzzing in the dash when I don't buckle my seat belt which is law.  Problem solved, some say the air bag won't deploy, maybe, hasn't been proven, but I am not worrying about it.

Same dumb law as the safety chains (a good idea) now requiring spring clips vs. just s-hooks being open.  What will the idiots in charge think of next to piss us off?

The 2014 Valkyries have passenger hand holds. My daughter says that they are useless with out a back rest/sissy bar.

I find them handy for strapping my laptop down. In my accident the laptop was not injured.

Dear Kelly Handcock,

I read the new law you had a hand in putting in place in Texas.  The one about motorcycles needing “hand holds” for passengers.  I have to wonder if you have ever ridden an motorcycle or been on one as a passenger.

Some motorcycles have such hand holds, they are called grab rails.  However, most of the passengers I know of don’t tend to use them because it is not comfortable.  Passengers that feel the need to hold onto something usually hold onto the rider (the person in front)

These hand holds as you call them sound like a safety devise, they really aren't.  What they really are is merely a “training wheel” type devise for a novice passenger to make them “feel” safer.  Once a novice rider gets comfortable on the bike they stop holding on to those things.  Its like hand rails in a stairway.  Most people don’t feel in danger of falling if they cannot hold onto the rail if they are comfortable on stairs.

Also ma’am, in the event of an accident or even just the bike falling over.  No one can keep from falling off the bike or have any chance or reducing a chance for injury by utilizing a grab rail.  They will still fall off and still be subject to the exact same risk of injury “hand hold” or no “hand hold”

This law serves only to be a form of harassment to motorcycle owners, manufacturers and dealers.  Folks that devised this idea obviously  do not understand motorcycles at all.

Sincerely,
Jeff Christopher

I see three things that will discount your letter -- first, you are not in his district, and second, I doubt he likes being called "ma'am".  Most men don't ....  And third, your misspelling of  his name sounds like a perverted joke.

The link that Serk provided describes Kelly Hancock as a businessman.

Maybe it would be more effective if we actually research the writer of the bill better than he researched his subject?
