Finally got the valk home, but the first thing I noticed was that the choke does not work. the lever moves, and the slides on the carbs slide, but it will not stay running with the choke out. Had to keep starting it without the choke, but would only run for a short time. After about 20 starts it finally warmed up enough to stay running. What to do???????

When you push the choke lever try to push it farther, they are stiff and takes a little to get the fully on.
On the side of the carbs there are little brass rods that pull out when the choke is on, make sure they are moving out. Actually there is no choke, they are en richer jets. To put it another way, when the choke lever gets resistance while you are moving it, push it another 1/2 to 3/4 in farther.

What Grumpy said.  Common problem with new owners, me included.  When you think the choke is on all you have done is take the slack out of the cable.  Keep pushing.  Don't open the throttle, just hit the button.  When it starts to run, slowly take the choke off, don't let it stay on too long or you will foul the plugs.

One more thing on starting.  If the battery is weak or it is cold like this morning here 27 degrees it may not start even though you think it is spinning fast enough.  Takes a good battery to move all those cylinders and compression.

Keep in mind, these carbs don't have an accelerator pump so twisting the throttle before starting only exercises your wrist, nothing else.

And yes.....as stated, pushing the "choke" through the easy part just takes out the slack. When it gets stiff to push, that's when you're actually starting to engage it. I got tired of the process so made a modified choke control. Got rid of that long cable the will eventually break. That little lever with the black knob moves the entire system much more positive.....no slack! And it holds any position you put it in.  cooldude

As other stated push it further. You may think you are going to break it but it will mover further.
My 97 is really hard to engage and has been since new my 99 however is much easier. So push it push it real good! 2funny

Got to messin with the choke this morning, and found that even if I push the choke lever all the way, the slides barely move. Either the cable is broken, or there is too much slack.

I wish John lives a little bit closer, and could maybe show me how to mount that little lever for the choke.

Where do you live? If not close to the Orlando area, maybe we could meet somewhere in the middle. I do have drawings and approx. measurements if interested. Takes a little fabricating but well worth it. If I had a method to cut out a bunch of them, I make some kits. I used polished SS so wouldn't be exactly inexpensive, but a heck of an improvement over OEM.  cooldude

That's an 85 mile haul for me at a time I'm not quite up to par just yet(lingering hip problem). Let's wait until the group has a lunch ride somewhere within 50-60 miles for me.

Sorry about the hand.  You might need to winterize the carbs if you won't be riding it for some time.

Did something so stupid...hate to even tell you. Had some stray dogs in the yard, and just wanted to scare them away, as I have a little dog and two cats. One of them was a pit, so did not want to take any chances. Got the old stevens 12 guage, and without noticing, picked up a turky load. Did not put it to my shoulder, just held it in my hands, and shot into the ground. That stevens has a hammer that you rooster before you shoot. Wellll...the kick drove that hammer into my hand, right betweenthe thumb and the next finger, and I mean the whole hammer. In case you ever want to try it...let me tell you ...IT REALLY HURTS. Not only that, have no use of my right hand. Looks like I will be driving the truck for a while.....John

Ouch  I can see that, I have an old mossberg single shot, that sucker will turn your shoulder black and blue. I can visualize what would happen just holding it in your hands.  Heal quick, that sucks big time.

Mr John this is Dennis aka Trout Dude Shelia's will not work it  is screwed up. I found out that where the cable hooks up top where  the barrel goes is broken. If you could pm me the drawings and approx. measurements that would be great. Look's like that would be good fix for what's going on with hers.
  Thanks Dennis

manual?  mine has this little arrow next to the choke symbol that points to the direction the choke needs to go to work.....I guess different years may be different or that arrow tab could be broken off??

Glad you figured it out though

+1 cooldude on the black lever, below the pictogram of the butterfly and carb throat, there is an arrow pointing down.
