I/S showa shocks: how long do they last?
«

Dear friends
Yesterday I replaced the OEM shocks for a pair of Progressive 412 (yeah, I know that the 440s are better but they are also pricey...) and it did wonders when it comes to comfort and handling.
That being said, I got curious: how many miles the OEM Showa shocks are supposed to last?
My I/S has 68K on the odometer and going up (and the shocks were still the originals).
Best regards
Savago
ps: half on topic... but how many miles the Progressives 412 generally last (I'm 6ft1 and weight is about 190lbs)?

It's not like they last until they fail (short of a traumatic blowout failure). All shocks seem to slowly deteriorate over time, making it hard to tell when it is really time for new ones. Then in addition to simple miles and years, there is the question of how many washboard roads you run, manhole covers, speed bumps, potholes, yada you ride over instead of around. Of course when you start bottoming, and move up the stiffness/dampening settings, you have been warned.
The honda showa shocks are actually pretty good product, and they may still be good at 68k, but not as good as they were new. Hold on to them for backups.

Don't you just replace them every 10K?

I don't know if they would be wore out at that point. It would be cheap insurance!
You makin' fun o'me?

Remind me again, were we talking about shocks.... or wives?
(Savago, this can be a tough crowd, but don't take it personally. Many of us are semi-professional wise asses.)
