The back story is that I bought a 97 Standard a few months ago, and just last week bought an I/S, so I'm gonna sell the Standard.

Great shape but I'm going to clean it up a bit. I noticed that the plastic center piece (that has the tabs for the side covers) was a plastichrome aftermarket piece, and the tab on the left side was broken off. The OEM piece was given to me with the bike, so being an upstanding guy I figure I'll put the OEM piece back for the new buyer, just to be sure the side covers don't go flying off his/her new bike.

To get the old one out I had to remove the chromed engine hanger cover, and surprise, surprise, the fuel selection lever just falls right out - it seems to have just been there to fill the hole in the engine hanger cover. It doesn't even have the installation screw in it.

If I hadn't read how petcock mods were so common on the Valk, my head might have exploded on the spot.

But now I'd like to know what the mod is so I can tell the new buyer about it. Anybody able to tell from photos? Here's one. A second one I took is all blurry, and now the bike is under cover with rain coming, so I wouldn't be able to get any more pix until tomorrow.

The amazing thing is, I have TWICE hit about 120 miles on the trip odometer and felt the engine start to stumble, so I dutifully reached down and switched to "reserve" on the unconnected fuel lever, felt the "reserve" kick in, and headed on down the road. Shocked

Dude, I don't see any mods to the petcock...sure the selector switch wasn't just on the petcock switch without the screw?  Anyone else see any kind of mod????

The knob was probably on the petcock and just came loose as yoou were taking things apart.

The screw is a 5 x 25

Wow. That was my first thought when it happened but I figured it was impossible that it would have stayed on like that.

The "selector knob" is held in place by one of the 3 bolts holding the chrome cover.  So it could of very well been operable without the screw in the center.

Very common for the screw to come loose and the knob to stay slid onto the end. A little loctite fixes the problem. I was stranded the second week I had my 98 for about 20 mins until I figured it out.

You, sir, are riding a Valkyrie. Several times I've forgotten to tighten things when working on the bike. Years might pass, but I always find those bolts, still finger tight, exactly where I left them.

You, sir, are riding a Valkyrie. Several times I've forgotten to tighten things when working on the bike. Years might pass, but I always find those bolts, still finger tight, exactly where I left them.

One of my Cobra pipes is very loose due to a stripped or crossthreaded bolt. The bolt will only turn a half turn either direction, and there is a good 1/8" of play. On a V-twin I bet it would rattle very loud, but on my Valk- no rattle at all...

I just lost the screw on my 98.  The 5-25 is not a normal size.  Does this mean a $3.00 screw from Honda.  Angry Please!!!!!! let this be in stock some where.
