..and dumped the whole gallon of Rotella T into the crankcase. I've done that before without problems, but it seems to be registering higher on the dipstick this time.

Should I drain some out, or is it not going to hurt anything being a bit over full? Undecided

Hmmm  I would still think you should be Ok. I used a gallon in mine but had used a little larger filter so I came out good on mine.

Two thing here.

Residual oil left in the motor will account for some of the "extra" showing on the dipstick.

Manual says 3.9 quarts with filter I think.  That would account for more "extra"

I save the little extra and get a free quart every now and then.

I know I have all the oil out.  When it stops dripping, I straddle the bike and hold it upright for several minutes, then lean it to the right and hold for as long as I can.  Then put in the whole gallon of Rotella and forget about it until next year. cooldude

That's exactly what I did. I'm going to forget about it. It's exactly what I did last year, too, and have suffered no adverse effects. Just seemed like it registered fuller than before.  uglystupid2

Thanks for all of the responses!!   cooldude

What type of filter and what type of rotella??? One more question, changing from standard non synthetic oil to synthetic oil, is there anything I need to do besises drain the old oil???

Also, why does advanced auto sell Honda OEM filters for a Valk for $6.49 and the steeler sell the same thing for $15.99??? The steeler does have a very nice show room...

Just drain the old and add the new. Thats it. I just put Shell Rot syn in 2 weeks ago and notice its more quiet then the Mobil 1. Use a filter from the generics page. Never knew advanced has mc filters.

Yep, ran it for a few minutes, let it set for about 15, then checked it. Interestingly enough, it took a skim through the maintenance manual to remind me that one shouldn't screw the dipstick in when checking the oil level! Wasn't quite as full (over) as I originally thought.  coolsmiley

Your good to go. I used fram one for years. Oil you got is great. Find a chrome salt or pepper shaker at Wal-mart. Cut to fit and you may have to wrap tape around your filter to get it to fit tight. Or go for your favorite beverage can.  cooldude Cut it to fit so it won't hit your fender, esp under heavy load, don't ask how I know...  Wink

Ah you still don't know anything! lol   Cheesy What I meant was, hitting a bump and have the fender come back into the can filter! You know how many Beam & Cokes I had to go through to get it to fit right?  2funny

I'd skip the fram and pic up one of the Wal-Mart house brand filters (SuperTech I think). I put the bigger size on and put the whole gallon of Rotella in. i think I used 15w40...

I don't know what everyone else thinks about them, but I would NOT run a Fram filter on my bike.

A few years ago, my Dad put a Fram filter on his Gold Wing.  The bike had about 15K miles on it and he was very fussy about maintenance, but he thought a "filter is a filter", so he put on a Fram.  He rode it about 400-500 miles and the motor blew up.  I remember it well, because it was on the 4th of July.  He called me and I hooked up the trailer and drove over and picked him and his bike up.  When he took it in to the dealer and they pulled it apart, they found small pieces of the glue that holds the filter material together plugging some of the oil gallies.  He tried to deal with Fram and they told him to "go push a rope".  The dealer went to bat for him with Honda (they're a very good dealer) and they got some of the bill covered.  I will NEVER put a Fram filter on anything! tickedoff

fram oil filters are really poor qualitity the end caps are made of paper and the micron filter element has a tendencey to rip in the pleats
