Anyone know of a replacement cover for my 99 tourer altenator cover. I can no longer look at the bubbled up mess it has become. 16 years of hard riding have taken it's toll on it. Maybe a fabricator I can contact?

thanks for any help

Prep the surface and paint it? The replacement covers go for mucho moola. There WAS some talk about some one MAYBE fabbing up a metal replacement after market cover but Have NOT heard any more about it. RIDE SAFE.

They can still be bought from Honda I believe but big Bucks. I have seen the chrome peeled off of them and painted as stated above. I have a couple extra new ones but have two Valks and I know they will be needing them sooner or later. coolsmiley

Someone had a cheap source over seas. Do a search for the thread to see if they are still selling them.

Unfortunately that dried up. The Europeans jacked up their prices also. I've got 3 ordered from a company in the Netherlands . But it's been 3 months now. My last correspondence with them they said they got them in and will send them. We'll see, I see they raised them to 400 plus euros on their site. I hope they come thru, I owe HayHauler one. Mine is wrinkly and it's been this way for a decade.

It is not getting any worse however. As long as

the chrome is not broken anywhere, it will not

change.  You can grab the edge of the chrome

and peel it off I am sure.  But, I'm leaving mine

alone. I'm used to it.

yea, any gasoline overspill seems to dribble down the left side of the tank and lands smack dab on top of the alternator cover (bike resting on the kickstand). I guess that's better than having gasoline dribbling into the alternator.

If anyone here has oberflowed the tank enough to get gas on the alt cover they are stupid it would take a gallon or more overflow to get to the cover.    Yeah I said it and stand behind it if you have filled the tank enough to overflow to get in that cover you need to rethink your LIFE.

Wrong. It doesn't take a barrel of gasoline to have *over-spill.* If you actually read, I didn't spell it *over-fill*. When topping off the tank, occasionally some gas will splosh up into the channel molded in the interior of the gas tank bezel, or from some residual gasoline in the gas pump nozzle dripping into the channel as you're pulling the gas spout out off the tank. The excess gas will then weep out of the bezel and dribble along the left side of the tank and drip off the gas tank's lower rear edge and land smack dab onto the top of the alternator cover (with bike on kickstand). This is also true when adding Seafoam etc to the tank if you happen to mis-pour some Seafoam onto the interior channel in the gas tank's bezel. Just noting that the alternator cover inherited a secondary purpose that wasn't anticipated in the original design, that is, saving the much more expensive chrome plating on the alternator itself.

I always thought it was more a heat issue, specifically, long periods of idling in hot weather. (traffic)

True, the gasoline drip might have nothing to do with wrinkled chrome on the alternator cover.

That is a strange site: you have to have the part number b4 you search?  uglystupid2

Partzilla, $160, here:

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/2000/GL1500C+AC/ALTERNATOR/parts.html

I bought one about 3 months ago.

And if you hurry, there's a new one on ebay RIGHT NOW for a Benjamin...

Might be a strange site but if memory serves me correct the covers were about $40 or a little less. I bought a couple.

Actually, a hot alt. cover and very little cold liquid will wrinkle the chrome. I was operating mine from a remote fuel tank high above the bike, while doing a carb sync with a fan in front of the radiator. When I disconnected the hose from the remote tank, some fuel spilled onto the pristine cover. The engine was off for some minutes before this, but alt was still hot evidently. The chrome blistered right before my eyes. You could actually hear it.

I have since experimented with said cover using a heat gun and cold water to remove the remaining chrome to prep for painting. Anywhere the plastic cover was susceptible to expansion/contraction, the chrome readily came away. The corners and other small reinforced areas held the chrome.

I suspect under certain conditions even washing the bike could wrinkle the cover, considering age and circumstance. But I think fuel might have a more devastating effect. From then on, just in case, I remove the cover before I do any maintenance requiring extended engine operation without riding.

thanks guys for all your input. can't believe how much they want for a piece of abs. I think it definitely was caused by a heat issue several years ago when she was running lean and hot. caught it too late. It really became noticeable when I added the kuri tranny covers. bubbled alternator cover really looks cheap next to that.
