I have a 99' touring Valk and purchased an interstate truck with all hardware. After purchasing all the factory mounting gear too and installing all, my touring saddle bags hit the trunk when I open them. Does the interstate have special saddle bags or what did I do wrong? My bags look exactly the same as other interstate models. What do I do the fix this?

Yes different hinge and lids setup but lid can work. You may be able to get the hardware from Honda and convert yours. Check the parts Fiche.

This schematic for interstate saddlebags is not the most user friendly and hard to see clearly, but you need hardware to convert a front hinge to a front clip (that releases), and two little cable ties so the lid comes off sideways and lays over the outer edge of the bag bottom hanging on the two little cables.  If you don't use the cables, you can loose the bag lid on a big bump and a soccer mom in her minivan will run it over for you.

You can make the image in the schematic larger, and it can be printed out.

I am not 100% sure the tourer lids (without any hardware) are the same as the interstate lids (without any hardware), and that all the necessary mount points on the inside of the interstate lid for the cables exist on the inside of the tourer lids.  You would think they would be for commonality of bag lids for all models, but I am not sure.  If you can find someone with an Interstate to hook up with a look at his bags and hardware it would be helpful.

Numbers 19 and 20 (and two 1's, rubber bumpers) are standoffs, which hold the bag lid off the side of the outside of the bag bottom paint when hanging on the cables.  They are not really necessary if you are careful laying the lid over on the bag, and when the bag is really packed full, they get in the way of putting the lid back on and latching it down.  I have the Honda bag rails, so I took my standoffs off, the lid cannot touch the bag paint, they lay on the chrome rails when hanging on the ties (and are unnecessary and just get in the way).

You need 30, 16, 29 (and all the little fastners/spacers/washers) to hook up the front clip, and the two cable ties 26 and 25 (and all the little bits) for the cables.  Note that front and rear cables are different lengths and not interchangeable.   Now the question I have about the different internals (if any) between tourer lids and interstate lids, is where the interstate cable ties must be screwed down to plastic threaded bosses inside the lids.  Hopefully the tourer lids have those bosses.  If they don't I would not go to the expense of finding interstate lids, I would jury rig something up, but you really need at least one cable on each lid, so they don't leave the bike.  But only one cable may allow the lid to swing down and hit the street, screwing up the paint/plastic.

You need two of everything, and four of some things.

Don't see the hardware he needs on those lids, unless I'm missing it.

There are 2 style lids. The older pre-IS lids did not have the mounting holes for the cables that the IS require.

You can us any other screw or hole to mount them to instead.

My IS didn't have those rubber coated stand offs, for when they are hanging on the side of the bag.

I knew it was something like this.  So if he has a 99 Tourer, it should have the lid holes.

If not, you make longer cables and run them to screws in the lid latch and hinge/clasp, fore and aft.

Thank you guys so much! Afraid I was going to have to buy new bags!

I had to replace my bags after an accident a couple of years ago and put Tourer bags on my IS.  I took the IS hinges off my old bags and left the cables off when I re-installed.  Now to get in my bags, I simply remove the lid, set it on my seat, and get what I need out of the bags.  So far (knocking VERY loudly on every bit of wood in the tri-county area)...I haven't knocked my lid off the seat.  That is the only drawback to the way I am doing it.  But, if you are careful, it won't be a problem.  Also, you have access to the whole bag opening to put stuff in.  With the cabled IS lids, you lost a little of the opening because the lid covered part of it.

Hope this helps.

i just ordered #29 and #30 a few weeks ago. My brother did the same thing as you, put a trunk on his tourer. the IS bags have an extra place in the lid to put a second cable but the Tourer bags do not. so be careful when opening them.

Joe, my first IS had the cables unhooked (dangling), and I just left them that way, setting the lid somewhere safe, and trying not to step on it.  This worked fine for years and years.  But what happened very slowly over the years, was the front hook-clasp on the bottom bag got just a bit lose, and then just a bit crooked (which I never noticed).

So one day I hit a really big bump, the crooked clasp let go, the wind got under it (at speed), and off she blew (I clearly heard the lid whack the trunk).  I could never understand how the rear latch let go.  So the moral of the story is keep an eye on the front hook-clasp to ensure it is fully engaged.  It was only after I lost my lid that I looked closely and discovered the hook hardware on the lower bag was crooked.

Having to get a new (used) lid, and body and paint work, and all the hardware, and one OE Honda lid rack (and I was lucky to find just one), was about a $650-700 lesson.  Just sayin.... Wink

I did an emergency stop on the freeway, still about a quarter mile past the lid sitting right on the outside white line on three lanes of busy, fast moving traffic, took no gear off and sprinted back down the outside of the road against traffic, multiple cars now weaving away from/around the lid, and almost got there when a soccer mom in her Caravan runs over it square and explodes it into flying pieces.   I still ran across the three lanes of freeway thinking I might find something salvageable (like the lid rack), but the grass was 4 feet high, and all i found was plastic pieces with no hardware on them.  Realizing my VA Troopers would not see this as an emergency stop and give me a ticket for playing in traffic, I ran across the road again and finished the day with no lid.  So it goes.

You can do a lot of things, but the above is the expected expensive outcome if you do not attach the lids to your bike.

I lost my first one from my old GW GL1100 (they never had cables. Weather seal worn, making lids loose). Then used the hinges as mounting points for the cables.
