Hi ya, just got another Valk, 2001 Interstate, and apparently it was desmoged.  I have a hesitation leaving off idle and started to look for things like vacuum leaks.  What I found was that the intake vacuum lines are not all plugged.  Intakes #4, 3, and 6 still have vacuum lines attatched, while #1, 2, and 5 are capped.  Does this make sense, or could it be the cause of the hesitation?  Also of note, is that the left bank exhaust emits vapor (fuel?) until it totally warms up.  Please, any help?

I don't know how you can assume it has been desmogged with vacuum lines still in place.

Yes, open vacuum lines can cause the problem you describe. The moisture emitting

from the exhaust is no indication regarding your stated problem. More investigation

is indicated.

Well, as I understand it, #6 cyl intake is the only one that needs to have the vacuum line in place.  The black plastic canister on the left side of the engine is gone, so I'm assuming a desmog was done....or at least attempted.

As always , go back to basics and think , I am going to check for vacuum leaks first. Then , I will de smog this bike. With the bike running , use a small whiff of starting fluid (with a nozzle if possible) near the possible leak. If the RPM increases , you have a leak. Do not over do the starting fluid and do not sniff the fluid as the government has taken away that fun by putting additives on the fluid (just kidding about the sniffing) W D 40 will work but leaves a mess to clean up.  Another way is to put a rubber hose on a propane bottle (do not light) and do the same test as with the starting fluid . Turn the propane on just enough to get a little flow and the engine reaction will be the same. Move the hose around the suspected area to test.

#6 vacumm line should go to OEM petcock, no other lines should be attached to the intake ports if properly desmogged. Are the PAR valves still attached and the chrome tubes off the engine plugged, capped or still attached to vacuum lines to the PAR valves? If only partially desmogged, she will never run properly.

Thanks for the reply da prez, and crackerborn.  I'll be tearing it apart this weekend to see exactly just what was done.  Have a feeling that the desmog was only partially done; chrome lines are still there for sure and the pair valve is probably there as well.  Bought the bike from a widow, feller died in December, so I can't call to get info on exactly what was or wasn't done.  Will post what I find out.  Thanks again.  Dan

Well I opened her up today and what I found was the PAIR valve intact and the PAIR control valve assembly still there also.  The only plugs I found on the intake riser nipples were on cyls 1,2, and 5.  #,4, and 6 had the vacuum lines still intact to the PAIR valves.

So here's the question; could this have been the cause of the off idle hesitation?  Bad Reed or PAIR valves?

Another question; could I leave the chrome air tubes and just plug the ends where they transition to rubber?  I wiuld think some silicone and a bolt in the rubber hose would accomplish the goal. ??

You can leave the chrome pipes where they are.  I used some rubber hose left over from my de-smog and plugged the ends of 2 -3 " pieces with JBWeld. I used hose clamps to hold them on the pipes and zip tied the pipes together so they don't swing around.  Been like that on my Black 99CT for 6-7 years.

I did that so I can re-install the smog crap if my communist state ever mandates OEM, which I'm beginning to think they won't, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Hook, that's what I thought.  Seems like a lot of extra work to pull all the chrome any replace with freeze out plugs!  Thanks
