What kind of mileage can a person expect from the rear Avon Cobra?

I think I set a record. My last rear Cobra got 26,970 miles and it still had a bit of tread left. I also keep 46 psi in the rear, 42 front.

What,, how did that happen Sandy??  got some special riding tips??  I would think that is a record, I really wasn't expecting to hear 10 t0 12 from a sticky tire.

Yeah, I think you got it right Bighead,, but I really do wonder how Sandy got that mileage,, maybe a really easy riding style?  I'm IMPRESSED.

Well, I really like a sticky tire, even with the compromised mileage,,,  anyone try any dual compound tires?? how do they grip,, what kind of mileage? recommendations??

I believe that the Cobra is a dual compound tire.  I run the Cobra on my 2003 VTX1800C and my 1999 Valkyrie Interstate.  I planned on putting a Cobra on my 2013 Goldwing F6B but I like the looks of the OEM Bridgestone at 6,500 miles so I'll probably will get another one.

Not ONLY tire pressure playing a roll in tire life BUT the other thing that helps determine tire life is yer right hand.  2funny And hard riding do help shorten tire life. Proper tire pressure-find SUGGESTED tire pressures here on this forum. M/C specific rear tire I M H O-no less than 42 P S I. Front MC specific-no less than 43 P S I-again-I M H O. Other pressures may or may not work for you. Just because I got X amount of miles out of brad 0 doe's NOT mean YOU will get X amount out of brand 0. Lott of folks here got 2 or 3 times he mileage out of Dunlop E-3s. I got less than 7000 G out of my rear one. RIDE SAFE.

The error of our ways,,,,,,,  sure is an eye opener when we see them...

Well, the Cobras are a multi compound tire according to this, I didn't suspect....

Avon has just surfaced their new Cobra tire combo for several Victory bikes model 2008 and newer.

These new Cobra tires come with a 6-ply design for the rear, including two high-strength Aramid belts and a supplementary nylon one for stabilizing the tire carcass and reduce the tire flex significantly.

The Cobras come with a three-compound construction for increased mileage and softer cornering, with no compromise over grip whatsoever. The center area of the tires is made from a longer-lasting compound which provides longer mileage, while the shoulder is made from a softer one for improved grip through the turns and a more comfortable ride.

The third compound binds these two together and helps uniform energy distribution and disperse heat better. The grooves in the Cobra tires follow the energy lines, thus offering a more even wear, while the snakeskin design on the tire wall are a head turner.

and, I saw this on the Avon site,,

Honda Goldwing fitment has unique pattern to resist irregular wear, an 80 load index for 992 pounds load carrying capacity and triple compound for high mileage center and more grip on the shoulders.

just not sure if it is suggesting that the multi compound tire is just in the Goldwing sizes, or used across the board on all Cobra tires.......  AV71, AV72..  The Avon is looking better to me all the time.

I hope it is true because I recently installed a set.  Although I suspect someone is a little math challenged.

Yup: our roads are quiet asphalt and I just ride to/from work now. With a compressor, it's easy to maintain 46 PSI and I'm not math challenged. I keep accurate records of dates/mileage/and parts used on a spreadsheet for each vehicle I own. Two bikes and an old F150. Even this past tire surprised me. I kept looking at it and wondered what Avon did. It is a dual compound tire.

I used to live on PEI, an island where the highest speed limit is 90km/h and very few roads are good enough to go above that. I ran the recommended 36psi because anything higher would knock the fillings out of your teeth and the best I got was around 22k km. Now I live on the mainland, run more divided highway than I would like to, and generally abuse speed limits. No matter how much air pressure I try the best I have gotten is 13k km, the high speed highway riding destroys the center of the tire.

So,,, we go from the high mileage Sandy has gotten, 27K, to the low 8K that heavyd experienced,,,,,,I guess I can expect about 11000 or or 12000 with the type of riding I do. With what I have learned about these tires during this discussion, what I have read, and what I experienced from the NOS Venom I ran before going to the Vredestein, I think a set of Avon Cobras is coming my way for this riding season.

Thanks to all, as always a treasure trove of vast experience and knowledge.......  Farther, is your bike all set for your trip to GA this summer?

Yes it is!!  Just fine tuning my kit.  A trip to Walmart for a Rand McNally Road Atlas (old school) and waiting for a UV Buff in the mail and I think I am set.  My last day in the office will be May 27th although I keep getting asked to do just "one more project".  I should be on the road the second week of June!!!

10-15K for most all depends on road material and twist of throttle.

I have near 10K or so and will be able (I think) to get another 1 year riding out of it after this year, maybe, depending on how many miles I chalk up this season.  I did look at the center tread a few weeks ago and is getting pretty thin vs. the sidewalls looking very good with lots of tread depth ONLY on outside of tires.

Anything under 42 rear psi is too low IMO.  I run 44-45 psi since heavier than most and if riding 2-up or loaded down on my I/S bags,  44-46 psi is better.

However, I find anything over 39-40 psi front tire is WAY too firm a ride and jolts over bumps in road into my hands thru handlebars, so I run 38-39 psi tops in my front tire.

I think your making a good choice. I've owned two sets of Cobras. Just bought a third set to replace the tires on my AZ bike. I've got 18K plus on them and if it wasn't for the rear tire being down to the wear bars I'd  be getting even more. I always change them in pairs. Inflation of the rear at 44, the front 42. I check inflation once a week. FWIW  Smiley

Do the rear shock absorber settings have anything to do with tire life? I have mine set at #5, as stiff as they will go and my Avon Cobras last only 1 season at 70MPH on the super slabs here, 15,000 tops I am guessing.

It had been bugging me since you wrote that,,,,, what the heck is a UV buff??   Well, I finally looked it up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63TCnOJVTPs

and thought,,,,    "that is what I need"        since I usually wear a hat to ride in the states that do not require a helmet,   got one coming for me too.  Learn something new here every time!

Yeah, I can see it now,,, heading across the desert  with a big yellow sombrero over a full face buff .....  heh  heh  heh

Ya, Buffs are great.  I have too many (6) but my favorites are a red Buff Santana XL Coolmax for over my face and a yellow Buff Santana regular size for my pumpkin head for a helmet liner.  I found that in my last trip from NorCal to Minnesota that my face got really sunburned but healed nicely (subjective opinion) when I started using the Coolmax Buffs.
