hi all,
i bought a 97 std that had a tach that was not working. i bought a used ICM and that did not solve the problem. i bought a used tach and that worked!
now the problem. the tach that works is broken where the plastic chrome cover screws on. someone had tried to glue it, but it didn't hold. the tach that does not work is fine every where, except it doesn't work.
is there a way to take the electronics out of the working tach and put it in the other plastic housing that is still good?

I have never tried to switch housings , but ABS plastic glue is the best for this repair. Painters tape to form the shape after cleaning the inside and removing any coatings or chrome. Black ABS specific glue with 24 hours or more between coats. After curing , can be sanded or painted.

" Black ABS specific glue" is that like a model glue? do you get it at a hobby store? i put some gorilla glue, super glue, on it. not sure how long it will last. i do have some JB Weld in the garage i=ve been using to make key fobs. will that work just as well?
thx

ABS cement can be found at home repair places,, usually somewhere close to the PVC glues and solvents, it is a specific product, not found at hobby stores, and is the only product that will make a perfect bond to ABS plastic. That said, although the only thing I have had my tachometer apart for was to put an LED lamp in it, and did not look into replacing the cover, I don't see why it can't be disassembled and the covers exchanged. I mean, it was assembled from parts, it can surely be disassembled into it's parts.

Black A B S glue hardening by Oatey. Repaired my saddle bags with this stuff. Sands fairly easy and can be used as  filler in small imperfections. Takes paint just like A B S plastic. Oatey is the brand name of this stuff. RIDE SAFE.

I just looked at a tach from my parts bike and the bezel is pressed on after assembly so if you can figure out a way to remove and repress it looks like not doable.Go with the abs glue or there is a kit on evilbay for repairing abs.Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

Any history of using a tank bag with your Valk?

Last year, my tach quit working & while I was trying to figure out whether it was the tach or the ECU, I researched the archives & discovered that the magnets in a tank bag will cause tach failure.

I was placing my tank bag on the bars while filling up. The tach needle was pointed max - full clockwise.

Fix is to take a strong magnet & drag the needle back to the zero position.

I know this is a long shot, but I'm told that tach failures are rare.

the needle is on the correct side, so I guess its the rare tach failure.
the pic shows the back of the tach under the cover. the long piece in the center is whats broken on the 1 I purchased and is now on the bike. its the part that the cover screw goes into.

I will purchase some abs glue this weekend and have it on hand in case the gorilla glue fails. right now, its a bit chilly here to run the std without a wind shield or faring. so I've been using the I/S for any riding fun  Cool
thanks for your suggestions!
