Those of you that know me will know that I've always said that I was not retiring, because I enjoyed my job so much. While all that is true, it started to dawn on me that none of us know what the future holds, and that my picture of the rest of my life might be optimistic. We don't know how long we will be in good ebnough health to do the things we enjoy, and my desire to keep working was not being fair to my wife and family, who deserve to have my undevided attention somewhere along the line. So, I have announced to all of my suppliers, employees and associates that I planned to be totally done by my Birthday on August 22nd of this year. It's amazing how much your attitude toward work can change once you decide to hang up that part of your life. In a good sort of a way is what I mean. So, that decision being made and implemented, it was time to start doing some of the stuff for the future. First on the agenda: Both Vivian and myslf to become Florida residents. So, now we have FL drivers licenses, and are officially a member of the Florida Old Farts brigade! Next will be my applying for for CCW permit. Then comes the heavy lifting of purging a bunch of the stuff I absolutely needed to have that now I'm not so sure about anymore. It will be a lot of work getting the CT home to be empty enough to put it on the market, and get down to owning just one home. But, others have done it, and we will get it done as well. So far it feels pretty darn good, although for now at least we are still working. However, it's a lot easier to put up with things when there is a light at the end of the Tunnel, and one is sure that it is not a Train coming!

Sounds like a good plan. Make a list, and work it steadily. Donations to verified charity can be written off (or some of it, the rules may have changed a bit). (get it documented) So can moving expenses, document that too.

I'm actually taking the Wife out this afternoon to an indoor range. She expressed interest, so I picked up a new SW 620 revlver that will be easy for her than my 1911. I got her some light loads, and that will be her home defense gun. She has no interest in CC.

Enjoy that retirement when it starts. I've been retired for 19 years and it has definitely been the best 19 years of my life. Just wish I could have done it when I was in my thirties instead of my fifties.

Good for you Pete. It's been 2 yrs. and 4 months since I retired. Congrats. Takes some getting used to not getting up for the morning drive to work and the routine changes but you will get through it.

Don't forget to put a hat in the back widow of your cage. You might want to start leaving the turn signal on, like Billy does. Good news. Gil

Pete, once you're settled in you'll begin to wonder how you ever found enough time to go to work. If I feel like getting up early, I do so. Other times I get up at the crack of noon. It's a great life, being retired, and quite difficult to get used to. Think it took me about three days. Welcome to the club, hope to cross paths a bit more often now. I've been retired 11 years, wasn't really tired of the old job, had many good friends there and had a nice office with a view, above average salaray to go with the responsibility of my position. Then a good buddy of mine that I had worked with for most of my 30 yrs. decided it was time, he got me to thinking. I was really in a rut with no outlook for a change anytime soon, so I turned in my papers and never looked back.

Congrats! I had the same plan but I find I have one Hell of a time giving up working. Definitely no more corporate work in my future and yet I constantly fight with myself over "work or not work". I preach the same thing that is going through your head. What day will be my last? shouldn't I be out enjoying each day? But I tend to practice my work ethic instead. At least it is only half days these days and I thumb my nose at Mike every time he asks me for full time work. There is some satisfaction in that.

Congratulations Pete! Having the pleasure of road time with you, I knew your work was never far, but also knew you enjoyed it. Sounds like a lot of "work" ahead for you and Vi, closing your northern residence and joining our never ending summer climate full time. The very best for you and your family. Looking forward to talking to you soon. James

Pete that's great news. I'll bet your family is looking forward to it also. I hope you stay so busy with the fun stuff that you don't have time to miss the old work related duties.

I've been thinking about it, but still haven't figured out how to implement the idea. I get to go on Socialized medicine in a couple of months and that has made me realize that I'm not 50 any more. Maybe its time to let one of the jobs go. The problem is I have been working 50 to 60 hours a week for 40 years and I'm afraid if I stayed home all the time I might get shot. My lovely wife of 40 years and I made an agreement years ago: We got married for better or worse, but not for lunch. Even if I retire I have to get up and get out so I might as well go to work. By the way, Jobs I still love. 1. Accounting and investment practice. 2. Teaching accounting at Miami University.
Best of luck and enjoy.
Hate to mention it, but moving expense is only tax deductible if you are moving for work related purposes. But there a bunch of things that you need to look into for the tax implications.

Thanks to all of you for the well wishes and advice. I know it will all work out, and am looking forward to it. I've got a couple of long rides I've been putting off. Now it will be a matter of finding another old Fart that wants to go the same places. One of my favorite things is to tour on one of my bikes. The destination is nice, but really, it is all about the ride. Hey, come to think of it, that's how life is as well. Well so far its beena great ride, and I'm not done yet.!

"We don't know how long we will be in good enough health to do the things we enjoy..." Congrats on your retirement! And so true about your quote. One of the reasons we decided to move now to where we have always wanted to live...while we're young enough to enjoy it. And to give our FL friends someone to ride with when they visit NC.
