My parents are going to Austin in a few weeks for a meeting. They and I don't have a lot of time but want to meet up. We thought Breakfast/lunch somewhere in the Hillsboro/West/Waco area. If the weather allows I plan to ride.

Do y'all have any suggestions for places to eat that are good and not a chain type place?

If you want to sit down and eat lunch, Taylors Smokehouse in Hillsboro would be my pick.  The Czech Stop has great kolaches but it's not much of a place in terms of sit down and eat.  More like a convenience store with a gas station.  I stop there on every trip to Austin to pick up kolaches.

But for sit down food, hard to beat Taylors.  5626 SH22, Hillsboro, TX

Waco - Red Wagon Bar-B-Que is really good (my son went to Baylor for law school and we ate there a few times - always good!).  169 Halbert Lane, Corner of the Parking Lot Between Homestead Market and Homestead General Store, Waco, TX 76705

Here is my "definitely not a chain" suggestion: Eat at the Health Camp.  It's even on a traffic circle.

http://health-camp-waco.com/

My Dad found it while he was in college at A&M and I've been eating there all my life.  Fancy?  NO!  Dive?  Yeah.  Time warp?  Definitely.

I had forgotten entirely about this place.  I need to go back.

George's in Waco is great.  Good service, good food and the Big "O"…

(I've only been to the one on Speight)

Health Camp is always a favorite…

Sorry. did not see this until now. I failed to check the 'notify me' box..... uglystupid2

The food was great! The owner came out a talked with us a bunch about smoking meats and guns and riding.

All in all a relaxing, enjoyable visit with great food and fair prices!

Thank you all for the ideas!!
