Just called Honda today and confirmed that the oil filter Honda uses on this bike is identical to the one they use on their 1100cc Shadows..

So, you can go to Advance Auto Parts and get a Fram PH1067A motorcycle filter for like half the price of what Hondas charges for the Honda brand...

Have used this filter for years with great success...

Not being cheap...just being thrifty...Fram makes a decent filter..I've used them for decades in everything with never a problem and all my engines last forever...Why spend an extra $6.00 if you don't have to right?? cooldude  More beer money!!! Grin

I rode across country four times on a Mobil 1 car filter.  Used them for years.  The real question is why pay more when there's no point?

GL1800 engine uses same filters that GL1500 engines use. it is honda's main std size. they all use to be a little longer until the GL1800 GW can out and to clear the fairing easily they shortened the filter. although i had no problem sneaking a std valkyrie filter past the lower fairing.

Fram filters are the worst on the market IMHO. Damn near burnt a car engine up on one.

I do agree with FRAM not being a good filter.  When I was a machinist my boss used to tell everyone not to use them on engines because they "filter too much" and we're prone to collapse under higher pressures.  He mostly built hot rod/race motors but it always stuck with me. I used Mobil 1 on every bike I've owned since 2005 with no problems at all.

Okay, here we go...a similar conversation/debate was endured on the Sabre forum several years back...and although I am not a particular 'fan' towards any brand of filter, I can only speak from experience.  I've used them for decades...on cars and bikes...NEVER a problem..zilch...So a guy builds race cars and says they filter to much...what? Grin  lol...Okay, crush under pressure?...okay, maybe in that particular application...but how many of us own high velocity race engines?????? Even still, this sounds sketchy...  Fram makes 3 grades of filters....extra guard, tough guard, and ultra guard...The tough guard is their midgrade filter and can be used for up to 5k miles with the appropriate oil..the ultra guard more...Based on the constructional characteristics of the oil filter, I would say their 'motorcycle' filters would fall in the same category in which is a decent filter..just as good as the Honda filter for twice as much..I KNOW I've compared them...

Fram filters are EVERYWHERE..and easy to acquire...

I don't buy fram products either, there are tests and facts about fram questionable quality all over the web, if you want to save a few bucks there are other brands that will fit, Walmart discontinued their ST filter brand, they were considered among the best quality, made by Champion filter co. who also labels Mobil 1 and several other brands. There are many alternatives other than Fram.

I am copying some information from the GL1800riders web ste that gives information about oil filters.  The first post is from me.  The second is from Bartman.  Basically, the Supertech oil filters from Walmart are available as Champion filters.

Dave

I am new to this board and I have been looking at the FAQ for oil. I am not sure if everyone knows that the Supertech oil filters that used to be at Wally World are made by Champion. You can get a 6607 or 7317 Champion filter through www.summitracing.com for $4.97 each. I use them on my Valkyrie, and I noticed that the same Honda filter is listed for my Valkyrie and the 2014 Wing.

I hope that I have not broken any rules here. I apologize if this information is well known. I have no affiliation with Summit Racing.

Thanks.

Champ Labs still makes a LOT of filters for a LOT of companies, including the Mobil 1 filters and some of the Amsoil filters for certain applications. You can spend some time on their website reading and cross checking all of their information.

In the meantime, if you want to buy some filters made my Champion, check out these two resources.

The "6607" filter that Champion made for WalMart is now the PH2876. You can confirm this by going to the Champion Labs Application page, click on the Cross Reference tab at the top and searching for PH2876. If you're interested in the "larger" 7317 version, that number is PH2867.

Now for the GOOD part.

12 of the PH2876 filters for $22.

12 of the PH2867 filters for $32.

Enjoy!

The deals on the Champ filters were from eBay links that did not copy.

I should have checked before I posted.  Summit Racing no longer carries the filters that I mentioned above.  You can get them on eBay.
