Well, we have the Harley and all the camping gear loaded in the trailer, with the exception of the food, and Roxie is on the way to get that now. We will be rolling out of here (Homosassa) at 0-Dark:30 and hope to make 1100 - 1200 miles before we stop somewhere in Missouri, depending on what the weather looks like across I-70. We may decide to run all the way up to I-90, and skip Missouri all together. We hope to be at our campground in Spearfish by mid-afternoon on Thursday. That will give us 4 days of sight-seeing (Many Thanks to Gil for some highlights to look for) before we have to head back. I will update our progress every evening.

We actually got on the road early. We hit the sack about 9:30 last night, but Roxie couldn't get to sleep. She woke me up about 10:10, and we hit the road at 10:30. We are presently in Columbia, MO, 1105 miles from home. We hit about 50 miles of rain in Northern Alabama and Southern Tennessee, but the rest of the trip was good. Only one traffic jam, and that was on the Northwest side of St. Louis, and It only cost us about 15 minutes delay. The weather ahead of us looks pretty good for the most part, except the campground might be a bit soggy when we get there on Thursday. The rest of our stay is supposed to be nice, with the temps getting a little higher every day. Another report tomorrow night, hopefully from some point West of Sioux Falls, SD.

Ok Don time for a mission, go to 43.841580, -103.544063 and send a picture of you two.  You will find the spot once you near the numbers.    Wink

If I knew how to enter coordinates into my phone or GPS, I would do that, Gil. I have written them down, so if I can get it figured out, I can do it. I have been looking for the different rides on my computer, and it looks like we will probably do Spearfish Canyon, Mt Rushmore, and the Iron Mountain Run all on the same day. We plan on hitting Wall Drug tomorrow on the way West, as we will only have about 300 miles to go. We plan on making Mitchell, SD tonight, and that is only about 550 miles from here. Easy run.

Since you are comming in from Mitchell you might want to stop at Wall before hitting your destination.  That way you can decide if the ride is worth it.

The numbers may be in a different format on your GPS.  Here are different formats for the same location.  You will know the spot when you see it.

43.841580, -103.544063
N43.841580, W103.544063
N43 50 29.7  W103 32 38.6
43 50 29.7  -103 32 38.6

We got a late start this morning, but were really in no big hurry. That is, until I checked Thursday's weather in Spearfish. According to the Weather app on my phone, the morning starts out great, and changes to 20% chance of rain about noon. Then by Late afternoon, it gets up to about 75% Chance of rain, and then it drops off again. Since I don't want to be setting up the tent in the rain, we pushed a little harder and about 200 miles further. We ended up in Wall, about 11:00 PM Eastern. A total of over 780 miles today, and only 100 miles to go in the morning. Even after doing the World Famous Wall Drug, we should be in Spearfish plenty early enough to have the tent up before it rains. Probably will not do a report tomorrow night, but will try to do so after each day of sight-seeing.

Not much to report today. We went to Wall Drug for breakfast and toured the exhibits for about an hour after we ate. I would love to be able to spend a whole day there just looking at the thousands of photographs and newspaper clippings displayed on the walls. We got to Spearfish about 11:00 local, after a quick stop at Wal-mart for a coupl of little items. We have got the tent and the rest of the campsite set up, and, as expected, it is raining. The temp is about 64 degrees, and the wind is gusting to about 10 mph. The forecast has changed a bit, and it is now calling for rain chance anywhere between 20% and 73% between now (4:00 PM EDT) and 4:00 AM tomorrow. Then it drops to around 48% until noon, and then it is supposed to be dry and get progressively warmer for the rest of our stay. We are thinking about going to Devil's Tower tomorrow morning with the car.

Yep pictures are needed.  What campground?

Radar shows rain working in from the Southwest.  Out a ways also.  Devils tower by car is not bad.

Looking forward to your next report.   Smiley

I will be taking lots of pictures, but it may take a while to post them. My phone takes pictures with HUGE files, so I have to send them to my E-mail address, download them in my computer, and resize them. Then I will have to have some help to remember how to post them to this and other forums. Just a matter of time, and relearning a skill that I have let go dormant.

Gil, I have looked up the lat/Long you sent me, and have figured out how to get there. If there is a way to enter lat/long into my GPS, I have been unable to figure it out. Rest assured that I will get there, and take a picture.

We are at the KOA off Exit 10, in North Spearfish.

Don, I admittedly know nothing about Droids, but can't you set the size of the picture files in the settings for the camera. I know you can on a regular digital camera. Just a thought to avoid all the file resizing. They will take up a lot less room on the phone too.

Don

Wish I was there to enter the data for you.  But give it a look see, try under GO TO -> (page down) CORDINATES.  It usually is in the menu area of FOOD, CITIES, SHOPING, INTERSECTION.

Good luck.

Well Don it look pretty wet out your way.  Seems to be hanging on top of the area and flowing from North to South.  Ride carefully.

Don

Something to try for the GPS coordinates I gave you.

Gil

Home > Nav > Where To > More >

OR

ROUTE TO DESTINATION (COORDINATES)

1.    Select Home > Nav > Where To.

2.    Select Geo.

Gil, I found (on the GPS in the Yukon) how to enter Coordinates, but there must be something wrong with that particular unit. When I tried to enter the N numbers, I would not accept the digits after 43. Those digits kept reverting to 59.999, no matter what I did. The W numbers entered with no problem. I will try to enter them in the GPS on the Harley when I roll it out in the AM.It has stopped raining, the roads are dry, the wind is down to about 5 mph, and the temp is in the 50s. Devil's Tower was a nice trip in the Yukon, but, if we have time, we are going to ride back there on the Harley. I think we'll do Spearfish Canyon, Mt Rushmore, and probably Deadwood tomorrow, Shooting for Iron Mountain Rd and your mission for Sunday.

Try 043.841580, -103.544063.  It may need the zero added to the number since the system is based on a three digit input.  So try 043.841580.

Iron mountain and the park is really cool, you might want to move that in front.  Watch out for the Bison droppings.

We are back in Florida, safe and sound. The only casualty of the trip (besides the computer) was our 10 x 10 canopy that was destroyed by high winds on our last night in Spearfish. The tent was flexing  so much that one anchor came loose, and we ended up stuffing everything into the trailer in a big hurry, and slept in the Yukon. Up at 5:15, took averything back out, repacked, and hit the road home at 7:30. Drove straight thru (38 hrs) to my son's house in McDonough, GA. Visited for a while, spent the night, had breakfast with them in the AM, and arrived home about 7:17 PM on Thursday evening. I am on a back-up computer, and hope to get the best one back in operation soon. I will be posting more details about our rides in the Black Hills as soon as I have time.
