Hi all, Searched for awhile, can't find my answer so here goes. Got a 99 I/S with 20k, running an Austone on back, Avon up front. 36psi rear and 40 front. No problems till the wife went for a spin today. When I hit a dip in the road at speed, I can hear the tire rub. Not good. No skid marks showing on sidewalls, haven't got under to look up at bottom of fender yet. Pretty sure the shocks are set at 3. Is that too low for 2 up? I'm 270, she's 135-ish... Can they be turned with the bags on? Will upping the pre-load fix this? Or is it a CT thing? thanks for any and all advise, Craig

I would set them on the highest setting or possibly try some Progressive HD springs. Oh and has the nut cage mod been done on your bike?

Don't believe the nut cage was done. Think I read here it did not have to be done with the Austone tire. If that's the problem, would it leave a skid mark on the sidewall? thanks, Craig

I don't run DARKSIDE but I think it would show on the upper 1/4 of the side near the tread.

Doubt it's the sidewall (Austone is 175 and stock is 180, but Austone is like a 65 and tall). It's probably up in the fender, and the thing to be concerned about is the tail light wiring up there. I never lost any lights, but on my first CT install, and doing the nut cages, I found good rubs and bare wires (by the previous owner with a bike tire) and had to do some repairs before the new tire went on. Pretty hard to look up in there with the tire on.
You don't say what shocks you have, but turn them up for 2-up (or all the time).

Jess, they are stockers. Before I try, anyone know if they can be turned with the bags on? thanks, Craig

I've been on 440s on both bikes, but still have my OE shock tool. Go to 5 and see if you can live with it. And a lot of guys like 40 or more PSI on the Austone. I really can't say if a harder tire would be more or less likely to rub on bumps.
I believe they can be adjusted with bags on, but lifting the lids may give more room to work. it does on Interstates, not sure on tourers with hinges. Whoops. My stockers were removed two weeks after I got my bike.

The stoçk shocks adjust at the bottom so remove the bags. Just use an 8mm socket and take the four bolts out on the inside of the bags.

The shocks adjust easier with the weight off the tire as well, so if you have some way to lift the back of the bike, do it. I was able to adjust the shocks on my interstate without removing the bags, by lifting it up first.

I have adjusted them with the bags on but it is not easy. Bags come off quick and easy.

I have the Austone tire on 3 bikes and you are certainly bottoming out hitting the top of the fender, check to make sure you didn't damage the tail light wires, they are protected by a metal covering....also you are running the tire pressure too low, with the high side wall you need to run between 40-45 lbs of air, if you ride double a lot, boost the shocks up to high, that would be the setting after 5.
I don't ride 2 up so I have never had this problem, but have spoke to others that do and with loaded down luggage and passenger they have bottomed out....if I did a lot of this type riding, I'd look into the heavy duty Progressive 444's...providing you want to stay with this tire...

Thanks all for the replys. Getting together with Hook tomorrow night and lifting her up and see what's going on. Lights still work, so the wires ain't ripped up, hopefully just some missing paint under there. HB, I'll up the pressure and up the shocks and see what she feels like. I'm usually alone, but I'll set them on 5 anyhow. (I ain't getting any lighter!) Again, thanks for the info, Craig

It was a beautiful evening for a ride and to meet HOOK, aka Bill. We pulled the bags and shocks and found the skid mark under the fender. Just a spot missing a little paint, wires ok. Need new bushings though. I have a set left over from the VTX, throw them on next rainy day. Changed the shock pre-load to 5. Did feel a bit stiffer on the ride home. He adjusted the CBX1100 shifter also, so now my work boot fits under it. I checked out his 3 girls, all very nice!
Bill, thanks again, and lunch is on me when we ride! Craig

Hey Craig, it was good to meet you and I'm still blown away on the deal you got on that State. I'm thinking Buba's or maybe Curtis's in VT. Bill
