Getting ready for my 1st gear oil change, so I started looking up the gear oil recommendations (2000 I/S). In addition to the 75w-90 and 80w-90 normal responses (and the "SAE 80" from the shop manual), I ran across an interesting 2011 thread from "Bob Is The Oil Guy forum (Amsoil Gear Lube Recommendation), http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/2134588/1I'm interested in using the Amsoil gear oil (I'm using their motor oil and filter). An Amsoil tech in that thread suggested to use SVT 75W-110 because it most closely conforms to the original Valkyrie spec, based on revised SAE J306 Specifications. Which I know nothing about. Of course there were plenty of rebuttals there as well. Anybody have comments about or validate what he's talking about?

As long as you see the GL5 rating, you're good.

Been using Amsoil 75w90 since 500 miles, 42k only changed it once to add some moly to it. never a problem. this oil has been used in OTR trucks for 500k miles without a change. now they have their highly rated high shock gear oil. IMHO using their engine oil or any full syn $$$ is a waste of money without using a bypass filtration system. any diesel oil today is just as good or better at a reduced cost. I was an amsoil dealer back in the mid '80s to the late '90s. I am well verse in their oils and marketing/sales procedures. this is their original m/c oil and is still listed as such http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/gasoline/premium-protection-10w-40-synthetic-motor-oil/?code=AMOQT-EA, around Y2K they put the same oil in a motorcycle bottle with a pic of a m/c upped the price and sales took off to the roof. maybe 8 yrs ago they reformulated the m/c oil but only for better corrosion/water resistance for bikes that site idle for long periods. search for the ST1100 on the bob oil site for all the owner's used oil analysis using diesel oil and others. u will be amazed.

I can't validate what he's talking about, but I can tell you that the Valkyrie final drive needs hypoid rated gear oil, and most people on this forum are putting in the synthetic stuff.

When you say "add moly to it," you talking about greasing the drive line splines? Also do you use Amsoil (engine oil) in your cage, or did you go another route there as well?

added this to the gear oil, same as is done to the factory fill. http://www.tsmoly.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=5_23&products_id=309I also use their moly grease and paste, for the driveline. my cage is a F250, 7.3l diesel, however my previous vehicle was gas, have used amsoil, but stopped and just use off the self oils since they have all had to catch up to amsoil to meet the latest OEM requirements. just about all oil on the shelve today are some form of a synthetic oil, they have to be to do what they do today. my fav right now is Delo400 15w40, has moly and high levels of boron which is the latest greatest anti-wear additive and cleaner. see specs here, and rotella 5w40 http://www.pqiamerica.com/June%202014/consolidated%20HDEO%202015.htmlgreat magazine to subscribe too http://www.lubesngreases.com/ usually free. industry experts, latest oil specs coming down the road, etc.

My experience on my shadow 1100 says that adding gear oil with a weight over 100 will cause your final drive to spew fluid out the vent. I dont know why this happens but a 75-90 didnt do it. As was mentioned above ensure the fluid is designed for Hypoid gears. Most are but be sure.

I use the amsoil 75w-90 gear oil and the amsoil 10w-40 synthetic oil no problems. Your call. Not cheap, but one oil change per year at 11 bucks per qt. and only 1 bottle of gear oil that will last several years is money well spent.
I thought about using my rear gearcase oil same 75w-90 mercury brand for my outboard engine that I have tons leftover, but decided against it. To me, they are so thick and looked identical to the naked eye.
