Tucson - Its a dry heat

« on: June 17, 2015, 08:07:37 AM »

Took an ebay kickstand to my welder and asked him to extend it an inch.  He called me the other day to indicate that he had found a better solution...  I said, ...ok, lets see what you got.  He's a great welder, but not really a bike fabricator...

 2funny

Other than the fact it added about 3 lbs to the end, and I would have to add another spring to hold it up, its a great idea.  And if I were three feet tall, it would make a great driver... Grin

If the spring fails and the side stand comes down while you are riding, air flow should keep it off the pavement.  ???

So, I am assuming you wanted the length extended 1" and not the pad?  If so, was he confused as to what you wanted.

Lesson learned, or maybe just dues paid.  I asked for it to be cut with a sleeve added, and extended, but he seems to have thought making the bottom longer was "easier".  These guys do really good work most of the time, treat me fair in regards to prices, but sometimes, they just go off on a tangent.  Sigh.

Maybe if I drilled about 2 dozen 1/4" holes, the spring could still hold it up... coolsmiley

Three inches seems like a lot.  I would be concerned there was another problem like a bent crossmember

I agree with Chris. Check the crossmember.

He wanted one inch longer; the welder extended the bottom of the foot, making it three POUNDS heavier.

Yep. Thanks Gryphon.
The bike had a 1" extension on when I bought it, and the angle was about right.  The crossmember is straight.

Then I put on a set of shocks 1" longer, for a little more travel and a bit more turn in. Worked great, but then I had to put another 1" extension on the kickstand.

It was starting to look goofy with a 2" longer pad  crazy2, so then I extended the kickstand frame bracket an inch, and went back to a 1" riser.  And then got the welder involved...

For completion of the circle...  ;DI just ordered an aluminum extension/pad from ???, somewhere, that is intended for a VTX1800. I'll prolly keep the putter on the wall in the garage as a reminder to not let the welder run amok...

This kickstand pad intended for a VTX.....please let us know what needs to be done to get it to fit.  Rivco still lists this for the VTX for $40.  You wouldn't think there was that much difference in kickstands between the 2 bikes.

This has been discussed before (although, probably been awhile).  If I remember correctly, the one for the VTX1800 will work, but you have to grind off some of your Valk's kickstand's foot to get it to slide into the the VTX's pad.

Big Mike (I think) made a run of these several years ago.  Not totally sure, but I thought they went for around 80 bucks new back then.  Maybe someone else knows for sure.

I thought it (the Al foot) would have come in today, but nada.  I'll post some details next week when I get it installed.

That said, I have a machinist friend who does a lot of factory work on Police Victory Bikes, which apparently  have a notoriously weak kickstand.  Saw his prototype replacement.  It was awesome!

He has NC mill, and basically made a new "headstock" out of 4130, and threaded it.  Then he used a 3/4" length of 4130 that threaded into the headstock, with a good looking oversize foot.  Then he spot welds the shaft threads at whatever length needed.  It looked like the headstock would be the same, and the 4130 shaft can be made any length with no cost changes.  Told him I would bring in my "putter" next week to see how close the headstocks are.

If they are close, I'll ask him how much for a couple copies.  He also did a spring mount tit, as well as the foot piece that you hook with your boot.  I'll post a pic next week.

I believe I purchased the last one Big Mike had at Inzane XIII.  Paid $75.

I know he had them, but the price was $35 too much, or I would of bought 2, one for each of my Valks.
Rivco's original price of $40 was reasonable.  That's just my opinion.

Yes, I know we can't get much in the form of accessories anymore for our bikes, but it really pisses me off when someone is out to exploit that fact.
