Riding today, it was hot.  105 or more.  Was in stop and go traffic.  Bike began to misfire, which gradually got worse until it stalled.  Won't restart.  Fan was running for the last 5 or 10 min before it quit.  No obvious signs of overheating.   No temp indicator.  Any thoughts?

Still on the side of the road, so I dont know if it will start once it cools.  Will update when I know.

A bad petcock or pinched vent hose could be described like that.

Stanley Steamer's bike stumbled to a halt and he had to trailer
it home once when his petcock was bad.

Valkyries don't have too many weirdo problems, if it is your petcock
it will be easy to fix, good luck...

It is either the petcock or I lost half of the gas in the tank somehow.  Put the petcock on reserve and it fired up and I got it home.  I'll take it to the gas station later today and see how much it takes.  Im mad at myself for not thinking "no fuel".  Thanks much for the idea!

If the tachometer acted up immediately before, it could be a bad alternator.

Either fuel or ignition. Battery or alternator will cause this, ignition system needs good voltage. Mine would cut out at low speed, turned out to be the ground between the frame and the battery. Check battery voltage at the battery between positive and negative post and then voltage from battery positive to the frame, should be the same. If not there is a ground wire between the engine and the frame that is not doing its job. I made my on short wire about #10 wire between battery negative and a frame bolt close by, been running great every since.

I did not see the tach going wild as it was failing.  I will check the battery voltage and grounding later this week when I get a chance.  Filled the tank and got what I expected given the mileage on the tank, so I didn't have a leak.  Checked for kinked vent line and found it to be OK.  Turned off the petcock and drove until I cleared the bowls of fuel and it started chugging, then turned the petcock to on.  It picked back up right away.  This is going to be one of those PITA problems, I think.  Thanks again for the help.

How soon did the bike die from when you started riding?

I'm thinking you turn your petcock off when not riding. Turned it on, and left for your ride. It wasn't fully in the ON position, and fuel wasn't flowing completely to the carbs.

This is why it worked after moving the petcock to another position.

It happened to me.

My first thought was the fuel was over heating in the carbs, vaporizing, and vapor locked. But I have no experience with this other than on a snow mobile riding in the hot spring time.

I dont think that's it.  I was riding for about 40 minutes when it quit.  As hot as it was and as slow as I was moving, I could see vapor lock.  I cant wait for winter.  Grin

I'll keep tinkering and if I come up with something, I'll post it.
