I can't seem to nail down what models/years came with chrome side covers...or were they just an accessory?

Never came on a bike (all painted),  chrome were aftermarket.

The chrome side cover set was not "aftermarket", rather an OEM accessory.
However Big Mike did have a few painted sets "plastic chromed", and they were at least as nice as the Honda accessory items.
