To remove the clutch slave cylinder the service manual says to remove the kick stand. Looks to me that one could get an open wrench on the three mounting bolts with out removing the kick stand. Is there something I'm missing?

yep. slave cyl, won't come out far enough to actually get it out without removing the kickstand.
