My brothers bike died on his way home. He replaced the alternator about 35000 miles ago. I trailered him to my place and started the bike to verify out put. Bad alternator. I had one on the shelf that I took to the rebuilder along with his to be checked. ( had it out in 15 minutes, bragging)
His was shorted out with a bent shaft. The one I had checked out as good with 48 amps out put.
Installed in about a half hour ( will tell trick I used in Another post)and bike would not start. I did the routine checks and also changed the relay and fuse . Still no go. Did the start switch service and checked wiring. Lights would go off  when start button is pushed. Went thru all the tests and finally put a jumper to  excite the kill switch. The bike started.  Under the right side of the faring is a 9 wire connecter (8 wires used) I unplugged and tested continuity to the switch ,good. I checked voltage at the pin , Had 12 volts. Plugged it back in and no voltage. Reset the connecters and the bike started. Remember , I started the bike before I pullet the alternator. This is the short version of the work. It took me about three hours to test all the circuits.  The bike ran well on his way home to include 50 miles of rain.
