I changed the alternator in my brothers bike. The drive was bent and rubbing and shorted out. The bearings were good. Has anyone else had this problem. Alternator was rebuilt about 35000 miles ago by MARS. I am not indicating any fault but would like to know what could have caused the bend.
On installing , there is a stud on the back of the alternator that is about at the 11:30 position . It is pretty long and I cut it off and it gave me the clearance to slip it right in. I tried a couple times before I saw the interference. On the next removal , I will cut it off first. It does not cause any structural issues. It gives about an 1/8 of an inch clearance  which is all I needed on this bike.

Picture?

I can't think of a stud on the back, other than the electrical connection.

Unbolt and move the center cover... Just enough room, don't hack up the alternator

I remember wanting to cut that lil sucker off too. it hit the frame and held it up enough to have to force it past that point.

It did not touch the center cover. I did not hack up the alternator. In the above picture , it is the stud just to the left rear of the top mount bolt. I cut off about 1/8 inch and the alternator slipped right in. This is on this bike , maybe another bike it will be different. I had it out in about 15 minutes and back in in a half hour.

Dug out my records book and the alt was installed April of 2012 about 48400 miles ago. No indication of trouble with alt from leaving my house in June and on up to I-15. Rode around in S D WY. and MT. and ZERO problems. NOT sure but after the rain drenching we received June 13th in Morrison Il could have helped start the demise of the alt. BUT if that's the case why didn't my brothers alt suffer a similar fate? As da prez stated it is a M A R S rebuilt alt that quit. I'll call him 2moro and see if he can shed any light on the situation. I'm THINKIN even a rebuilt alt SHOULD have lasted more than 48400 miles! AND the reason we are posting here about my "situation"!  2funny RIDE SAFE.

Are you referring to the bolt hole there on the side of the alternator (on top)? That is where the capacitor goes for the IS models (GWs).

I found the alt went in very easy in my GW. Waiting to do another member's IS alt and see if it goes in just as easy. 15 minutes to install and get running.

Hell, some new OEM ones don't last that long.   What failed?  New alternators are available fairly inexpensive compared to OEM new.

The drive impeller has a bend and runs off center. I will pull it apart if mars does not want to see it.  I found no reason for it to be bent.
