If I got the clutch in it doesn't do it. First valk and definitely not a mechanic. Had it in air checking a whining noise I hear from rear wheel if I am coasting. Doesn't make that noise on jackstand but the clunking got my attention. This bike is an 01 I/S with 2,500 miles.

By no means am I an expert, But with all the weight off the swingarm, it is at a steeper angle than normal. Does it sound like its by the rear wheel or where the boot at the back of the tranny hooks to the swingarm?

If the rear wheel is hanging down too much, the u-joint might bind.

The noise sounds like it is coming from the center of the bike, right behind motor. I only did it for about two minutes then quit. This will give me a reason to ride tomorrow. Need to make sure everything is ok  Smiley Thanks for the help

As far as the whining noise that had me putting it on the jackstand in the first place..... that noise sounds like it is in the rear wheel. Its not a tire noise more of a rear axle or maybe brake....

Try supporting the rear of the bike under the swingarm. That will simulate a normal angle on the U joint. My vote is for the U joint not liking the dropped angle of the swingarm.

First.... I agree that it is probably the swingarm hanging at a bad angle that is giving you a clunk issue.  So, get it down off that angle or at least don't run it in gear on the stand at an angle.

Second....  These bikes  have some big honking square cut gears that are trying to mesh and move you down the road, and you very well could get a whining noise as a result.  I have had a whining in my VTX's rear end since it was new, at a certain speed range...   it could very well be a harmonic vibration sound as well.  If that whine is constant, then there might be an issue to look at but don't try to do it on a jack stand without a load on it.   It could be your tires making a hummmm if there is some cupping wear on it too.

Have you ever jacked a car/truck up & run the wheels?  Clicks & clunks right?

Same thing here, you have no resistance on the wheel when it is in the air.

Take it off the firkin jack, quit worrying about noises and just ride it......

When ya have 100,000 miles on it, then listen for odd noises,

First  of all has the oil ever been changed ??
How about the other fluids ?
A bike from  01 with that low of miles..
I'm sure condensation has been working....
I would change fluids... And ride it !!!!

AS for the whine sound It's more then likly the Trany.. They ALL whine...

I concur!

My opinion is that running anything "in gear" while jacked off the ground is not good.  Too much backlash and such will surely cause drive train problems and premature breakage, especially to a u-joint.  I don't apply this logic where an automatic transmission is involved.

Thanks for the reassurance that nothing is wrong... Oil was changed every spring I was told. Has not changed other fluids. I will change brake fluid and coolant in the spring. As far as riding it, I am trying to get in as many miles as I can. Hope to get at least a few hundred in this weekend.. Smiley

will change brake fluid and coolant in the spring (Quote).

If this were my Valk. it would not roll a hundred miles before I ;; Changed "all" fluids, lubed splines and other, checked tires for dry rot, run Stabil thru carbs, and change oil before storage for off season. ???
