Hi all, While cleaning the bike today I noticed that the choke cable doesn't do anything on the right bank of carbs is that normal ? the cable moves the slidy bit but that doesn't do anything to the carbs. The sprung loaded Choke valves pull in and out freely .
 Thanks

The cable can be adjusted.
There is a cable that runs between both cylinder banks.

The starter lever (slidy bit) has three arms that are bent down at 90 degrees that have slots in the ends. The brass starter valves should have nail-like heads that fit into these slots, so that when the lever slides it moves the valve out and in. The starter lever is the same on both sides, so, if it works on the left, it should work the same on the right. If not, something is assembled wrong or broken.

Take off the flat chrome covers (3 Phillips screws) on both sides of the engine that cover the choke slides. I seem to remember an adjuster on the left side of the engine where the cable goes around to the right side choke slide. Adjust the slack out of the cable and test

Thanks for the replays, I get all you have said an can confirm all is there but the little nail heads aren't in the key slots. My question really is " would there be any reason why" if not I'll reconnect. Thanks

As WintrSol stated, assembled, or reassembled wrong.  Have the carbs ever been removed?  New cable installed?

Some riders claim not to need the choke when starting.  I use them every time on cold starts.

How does your bike run when starting cold?

Yes, it needs to be put together correctly. I am surprised it is not causing a high idle. The nail heads are the fuel enrichment valves. They are easy to correct. When you remove the slide screws , there is a two piece slide bushing and a small return spring . Reinstall the slide control properly , install the bushings and screws then the return spring. All three on both sides should be in place.
Check the operation. Even if you do not need the choke to start , it is best to have it available.

And if you get careless and disassemble it too much, springs have a tendency to fly away into an area of the shop....never to be seen again.  Wink

Ok, thanks for all that. Ive only had the IS a couple of months and the weather here in UK has been quite warm so the choke has been put on to start then I can take it off pretty much straight away with no issues. Ill contact the PO and see if he took them apart. I didn't think it was right when I saw it but don't know enough (anything) about these bikes.

Dear Friend

Congrats on buying a I/S (I have one for over 1 year and it is being a great bike).

It would help to diagnose the problem if you could post some photos here in the forum.

Cheers
