Need to do the rear end and drive shaft maintenance soon. I recently changed the oil in the pumpkin, so I don't feel the need to replace it again this soon. However, I want to be able to lay the pumpkin on the bench to wiggle the drive shaft out of it and I'm not sure if the oil will spill out of the vent.

Wheel side down it may not leak out. I really can't say for sure. It most likely will leak out the vent if that side is down.

I received both a GW GL1500 and a Shadow VT1100T rear, and shipped out my Valk IS diff, and have no more than a little oil leak into the packing material after being received.

I have a spare pumpkin out in the garage laying wheel side up.  It's full of oil and it's not leaking anything.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think there's enough empirical evidence there to make me comfortable laying the pumpkin down to get the drive shaft out without worry of the fluid leaking. Thanks to all who responded!   cooldude

just let it all leak out and replace it while your at it. just a few more bucks for the oil and peace of mind. I drain and replace mine with every rear end service. one bottle of rearend oil will do 2 oil changes in the pumpkin. but it is also easy enough to get to and change while on the bike too. whatever you want to do, i'm just here to take up another post.  Grin  Hope to see you in September
