Gentlemen,
I just picked up a 99 Standard with a dark side tire. I've tried it and I don't think I'm going to like it. The previous owner just put it on, so there's hardly any miles on it. I believe it's a Goodyear. I don't know if there's any interest in it. I'll probably put it on CL.
It also has a heel-toe shifter. I don't know who makes it. My boots pretty much hit both sides and I have to keep my foot pointed out. I'm considering going to the standard shifter and peg setup. My question is about the original setup. Was it lacking in any way? Based on the number of people that switched it out makes me think it might have issues with clearance. It has the first part still attached, I need the final shifter. And what's the loop for?
Thanks for any input,
Bob

The DS isn't for everybody. However there are big differences between different profile tires, in how they behave. Generally GY has not received good reviews. If it's the Triple Tred, it's profile is very square. Tried that one myself and hated it. If you try the darkside again, look for a tire with rounded corners. Search on the board here, there's lots of feedback on different tires. I myself am on my 4th DS tire, presently a Vredestein Snowtrac which is discontinued, but I like it. You might want to get an Austone Taxi Tire, very good reports. I personally don't care for heel-toe shifters. Mine is the OEM shifter, now with Big Bike Things forward controls installed. I modified both sides as both Honda's and BBT's engineering is lacking. Honda's design is pretty lame, if you look closely at how it moves. Needs to be supported on the end. You can see my mods here: http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,79792.0.html and here: http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,79099.msg775018.html#msg775018The wire loop is to keep your foot away from the hot exhaust. Just in case you ride with sandals, I suppose.

Bob, when I got my 99 I/S, I didn't like the boards or the H/T shifter. I went back to the original pegs and a shifter from the Honda CBX 1100. (Think that was the model). It has a curve away from the engine so there's more room for your foot. Craig

My tourer had a Rattlebars heel toe shifter installed on it when I bought it. I am a fan of H/T shifting but I had to remove the rear shifter peg just so my foot would fit on the main footpeg between the shifter pegs. I only wear size 10 1/2 shoe. They didn't leave much room. With the rear shifter peg removed my heel just catches the rear edge of the chrome shifter arm when I upshift and doesn't seem to get in the way of my foot position on the footpeg while riding. I get really smooth shifts with it now. I can use only the standard shift arm or do it heel/toe.

CB1100RR is the model some use. OP: What size shoe? If you raise the shifter up one spline on the shaft, you can usually get your toe under it. I make sure to buy boots with a small toe box.

Thanks for all the input. Great info about the tire.
Sandy, size 11.5.....
I'll start looking for a shifter lever. Ebay seems to be a bit scarce at the moment....

Using a car tire on the back of your bike. Also, using a MC rear tire, reversed on the front. Do a search here for "darkside" you will have enough to read for some time. I've not seen a heel-toe shifter that didn't incorporate the OEM shifter arm with toe peg. Are you SURE it's not there, hiding behind the heel-toe hardware?

Could it be a Kuryakin Toe/Heel shifter such as on my Valk? It has its own pegs.

Good advice Sandy, I bought a heel/toe shifter for the Valk because I loved that set up on my Kawasaki V2K. HATED it on the Valk! Reason I bought it was that the OEM shifter barely allowed my boot under it. I finally came to the realization that I could move the shifter up a notch or two. Took off the heel/toe and am very happy now. I took off my Ultimate seat and put on a Mustang which moved me back about an inch and now the cockpit feels a lot more comfortable. dcon
