Hello all.
I have come to really appreciate this forum, as there is so much information about my phat gurl it is unbelievable. So here's what I have. The bike has 5x38" truck stack, with piggies removed. She hums going down the road, it's almost a calm and soothing hum, you all know what I'm talking about. So, I have been noticing the last few months that the bottom of my hard saddlebag has been slowly turning brown from the exhaust. I was thinking maybe just exhaust fumes, so I didn't bother with them.
So tonight, I pulled the whold bag off, stood it on end to realize that it's not exhaust fumes, the paint is actually turning brown from what appears to be heat. One part has actually burnt through the paint on the underside. I inspected the tin that I gather shields the bags from the exhaust pipe, it appears to be alright, however too short. The exhaust tips extend beyond the bags, and I really like the sound so I don't want to change them.
What would the intelligence of this forum think I may have going on here? My thought is aiming for exchangin plugs. I think the excess gas is slipping through and thus causing my issues.

Please and thank you for all your insight.

Same here. I would doubt that your burning  your hardbags. Take a good polish and see if that removes the brown stuff.

if they are oem bags, the oem heat shields end at the end of the bag.
maybe PO modified them, etc.
most likely as others have noted it's just exhaust residue.

un-burnt gas if excessive usually will burn in the exhaust header which is hot enough to ignite the mixture, but this is all a rare case and usually happens from highly modified engines due to bad tuning including wrong ignition advance curves for the cam etc.
with our bikes excessive gas will usually turn the header a different color.  noting is really going on at the exhaust tip.
