I had 3 of my guys quit to go work for Disney. Even though that is probably a bad decision, they are going to be very prone to layoffs. Well, no big deal lots of unemployed people right? Well, the first guy I tried to hire just failed his drug test! So now he gets to stay unemployed. It was kinda fishy anyway, he "didn't have time" to take his physical on Friday so he waited till Monday, that's a big no no, but I really wanted to believe him so I let it slide. I guess he couldn't get cleaned up in 4 days. Dumbass. He is among a ton of dumb craps that I'm sorting through. One guy put a picture of him and his dog on his resume? Another guy emailed me and said I needed to provide more information on who I was before he'd send his resume?? A bunch of them want to pick and chose their shift. Oh well back to the stack of resumes... Got 2 good ones, just need one more.

Yessir.... You gotta shuck a lot of oysters to find a pearl....
That's one of the problems in hiring nowadays.... People don't want to work... They want a position....
One of my warning flags is.... when the first thing they ask is.... When and how much do I get paid and when do I get days off....
I remember when I first started working at my first job.... I literally worked 27 days before I got one day off.... I worked everyday between 12 and 20 hours at a time.... I was just happy that I had a job and a paycheck coming.... one day...
Things have definitely changed.... and not for the better in my estimation. Good Luck!

Unless you are looking for highly specialised workers I'm suprised you are finding it so difficult. Here in Atlanta you would have your pick of the crop.

I also have a stalker. He has been stalking me since before the plant was finished. I told him in our initial meeting that we wouldn't be hiring until the building was completed, but he kept coming to the site to inquire when we would be hiring. I told him he didn't have a chance in hell of working for me because he was not able to follow my instructions. He bought a hard hat so he could sneak on the site! I finally had to tell him I was going to call the Sheriff the next time he came on site. Well... after we finished the building he came back, he thought he was only banned from the construction site. I chased him off again. NOW, the SOB has found my assistant's cell phone number and has been calling him! What on earth make this guy think I would ever hire him?

Really it's the other way around. There are lots of construction workers, welders, plumbers, electricians, etc. looking for work. But we need industrial mechanics. They need to be able to do all of it. I guess you could call a "jack of all trades" a specialist. I'm getting hundreds of resumes, just a few good ones.

It would have to be a really bad job for me to want to quit and go to work for Disney. They treat people like crap and pay the majority next to nothing.....and the first chance they get, they get rid of yer a$$.
Just say "NO" to Disney

I tried telling them that. The pay is good, but I hear they are a bitch to work for. They hand out "points" for just about everything, shirt not tucked in, improper facial hair, you name it. Even though they will be working in the laundry they still have the same dress code as the entire park. I told Arnoldo (Gordo) that he was doomed, because he can't keep his shirt tucked in. And if you average in the layoff time, the pay would be about the same.

Uh, huh... And as I recall my father (born in 1901) had exactly the same complaint when I got my first job 45 years ago. That was when he wasn't pointing out how many miles he walked to and from school (all uphill.) I don't see much has changed in that regard.

University of Georgia!!...I worked there as a Groundskeeper I on the UGA golf course back in '93 after I graduated from there......the pay SUCKED...something like $13,500 a yr, but I didn't want to work in Atlanta...I bided my time until the County Landscape crewleader job opened up...I jumped up to $22,000+ in '96 when I got the county job....and have doubled my salary in the last 14 yrs...my benefits package is another $13,500/yr...... UGA is the largest employer in town and they pay the worker bees peanut wages......

You are lucky to find that many that can pass a drug test.
For plain old workers I have heard that it runs about 50% cant pass, then after they waste your time you have to find ones to do the job.
If one of the carpenters or electricians is willing, put them on probationally, see if they are a jack of all trades. Even if they can do everything you need, they will still need to be trained. Ask them if they are willing to OJT and get certified on their own time.
Good example, there were 2 guys hired to the same position here, one was a electrician with some trade school for electrician, and the other was prior military technician and college all communications. The bosses were pretty impressed with themselves over the college guy. 7 years later the electrician is one of the "go to" guys and as far as I know the other guy is employed, somewhere.
You might want to work with a guy who gives you a good feeling, if you can.
