Could use some advice on going with the interstate tank on my tourer. Any and all sugestions appreciated. First question is the petcock the same on all models or is it different on the interstate. i would think it is the same. Next anyone have experience with the sending unit. I want to hook it up to my dakota digital guage that accepts a fuel input. I want to clean the tank out real good before i have it preped and painted. This is my next big project and I could use the input.

bolts right on. do a search for issues with the OEM sending unit and using an after market gauge. there were some issues to make it work. I didn't bother with a gauge with the I/S tank I put on my std/tourer. I have the petcock reserve and trip meter.

http://www.timskelton.com/valkyrie/how_to/tank.htmOld, links don't work. Remember your driver's seat nose will be a bit long, but fit. Need a key for it, won't match yours, might be re-keyed to match (might walk the parts to a lock and key outfit before install. Clean the internal tank screen/intake tube (4). No exp on sending unit, but if the tank doesn't come with one, I think you can order one (several parts). That phillips head screw inside the petcock selector is really a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdriver screw (23). http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-tools/jis-screwdrivers/ A phillips will work but don't bugger it up. I am not sure if the #10 rubber bumpers are the same on both size tanks (see if the part numbers match). http://www.servicehondapsn.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=4223950&category=Motorcycles&make=Honda&year=1999&fveh=188145

If your Dakota Digital unit is programmable, then you're OK. Otherwise you'll have to find one that is. I've used an Autometer C-2 for many years and is programmable....and pricey. Motosens also makes one used by a number of Valk riders. The problem is with the sender, it works backwards from the normal industry approach. Full = 0 ohms; Empty = 90 ohms.
There is a way to change that but for now, that is what you're faced with.

I fitted a interstate tank to my std last year. No problems...fits straight on. The seat sits tight up against the tank but even with my L/wool seat cover it fits. I put the sender wire's up under the tank so if I ever decide to hook it up it later,it will be easy. The couple extra litre's is a real bonus. Best mod I done. cheers... Brian

Petcock is the same.
I had a friend tell me when they installed the petcock from the Tourer into the I/S tank the bike still ran out of fuel at 130 miles, but the reserve was much greater. Probably not a concern of yours but thought it was worth adding here.

Better check your friend's credibility. The petcocks are the same and the "reserve" is simply a distance from the bottom of the take (length of the petcock tube for "on"). Pinching the fuels tank's vent tube can cause it to seem to run out of gas early but it has little to nothing to do with the petcock. Little rather than none because switching to reserve can sometimes cause it to start flowing again initially.

Probably not a concern of yours but thought it was worth adding here. Your friend is full of it. I don't doubt he had a problem but instead of tracking it down he just associated it with the IS tank. I cant even understand his logic. The petcock is the exact same on both models, the IS tank has more volume so therefore will go more miles before reachimg the screen on the petcock.

Unless the Petcock you bought from fleabay is an OEM I wouldny use it. Jess no lock and key guy needed just swap the tank caps.

A little confused here guys. Sounds like there is a small difference, 5 mm. But that it does not really make a difference. Both seem to work n either bike. Just wondering if i should get the interstate petcock or leave the one thats alredy on my tourer, which works great. Or should i change it out so it is new.

If the one you have is good I'd stay with it.

You will see this difference. If you use a petcock from an Interstate (shorter) on a Std/Tourer, you will experience a little less reserve range and a little more range before reserve. Total tank range does not change. If you use a petcock from a Std/Tourer (longer) on an Interstate, you will experience a little more reserve range and a little less range before reserve. Total tank range does not change. You have to decide if this small difference is important to you.
