Everything looked great inside. I had never had the drive shaft out, and since the PO only put 7000 miles on her, I doubt he ever did either. That means she went > 38,000 miles before her first drive shaft maintenance. Both ends looked like brand new and the rear end of the shaft was nice and wet with oil from the rear end. Replaced all three o-rings, lubed her back up, and reassembled.
Many thanks to Daniel Meyer and others for the tip to raise the drive shaft and swing arm above parallel with the ground to re-insert the shaft into the u-joint. Went right in on the first try. After reading some of the horror stories on here, it was the part of the job that worried me most. Tomorrow John and Donna are coming over and we're doing the same to his bike. Should go even quicker, since it's all really fresh in my mind.
You got lucky for sure. Just remember to tighten the 4 pumpkin nuts last as this is want keeps the spline alignment true .
Now I just need to get the stupid fork seals done and she'll be in tip-top shape!
