Also known as 5.1 US OZ.

5.1 US OZ is for a refill after a teardown.

On a drain and change the manual recommends 4.1 US OZ.

5.1 oz is roughly 150cc.  150cc is a perfect fill after a normal drain for maintenance.

I never really measured exactly, but pretty close to 5 ounces am sure I put in or a tad over.  I did roughly measure when I did it am sure for the first time (gunky stuff when came out pretty dark) about 3-4 years ago on my 2001 I/S and just past around 5 ounces,  the gear oil when bike was LEVEL (NOT on side stand) started to run out the top hole, so once that happened with wife sitting on bike level,  I put the top fill plug back in and called it done.  I say if you have another person able to sit on the bike level while you inspect to see new gear oil starting to run out of top fill hole,  it does help.

Warm up the bike some as well taking it around the block first since gear oil is goopy thick and runs very slowly.  I also sat on bike and tipped the bike over to the right side letting it drain got some more of the old gunky oil out just a tad more.  I also tip the bike over to the right as far as safely possible putting a lot of weight on my right leg a few minutes when I change the old crankcase oil out.  I bet changing the oil that way gets out another 1-2 ounces at least if not more once after warming up the bike with a short drive so oil is somewhat hot to the touch.   Just don't do it after a longer ride since once on the crankcase oil change I did that and the darn oil can get VERY HOT to the touch burning my fingers a tad as I've done 1-2 times as well in my vehicles as well.

Dear friend

As already commented, the manual says 150ml but it will actually fit a little more than that.

It is an easy procedure to do (was one of the first jobs I did on my I/S when I bought it last year). You may benefit of removing the side pannier to have easier access to the final drive pumpkin.

Some photos of the last change I did can be seen here:

OK, so just put as much as you can in there.  I don't think more is better.  Hypoid gears create foam in an overfil situation.  In that case, more is worse.  150cc is fine, fill on the side stand or while the drive is removed and none will leak out creating a mess to clean

Hi there, Chris

As I've said, 'it will actually fit a little more'. That is to make clear that adding 150ml will not overflow.

I never said 'add as much as you can'.

Savago

My point is that it's not good for it to add a little more
