This may be an odd question, but does anyone know the difference between a "Flange Bolt", and a "Special Flange Bolt"?  ???

I have a set of Tourer hard bags (with brackets) and need to pick up the bolts and collars to mount them.  I can order them from Ron Ayers for $40, or I could try a local nut & bolt place that deals in metric fasteners for 1/4 of the price... if they have them.

What's odd about the bolts are that two of them are regular 10x70 Flange Bolts... while the other two (8x23 and 8x68) are listed as "Special Flange Bolts".  Based on the exploded view diagram they all look exactly the same, so other than the size what's the difference?

Anyone?  Bueller?

The only difference I can see is the word special.

You can get all six from partzilla for under $25.

Oem' s are good quality chrome and the thread pitch is correct.

My thinking too, with the "special" word. Thanks for the partzilla info!

The 10 mm is a 10X1.25 pitch (fine thread). The other is an 8X1.25 pitch which is a standard thread for an 8 mm.

10 x 1.25 can be hard to find.  When I was making a bag quick-drop kit, I actually had to buy SS rod and thread my own with a die set.

I have the bottom of a 1 gal ice cream pail with the bolts I removed from my wrecked IS. I also have a bag of nuts/bolts bought for my Shadow ACE and my GW GL1500.

You are welcome to meet up and look through them for what you want. I might even have some spacers from the bags.

The special feature about the bolts is their length.  Metric bolts are manufactured in 5 mm increments.  So the 8 x 23 and 8 x 68 are a special length.  I don't know if the extra length of a standard fastener will make a difference for your installation.
