Just had new petcock installed on my 2003 Valk...is not going to reserve. Shut off works but not going to reserve. Any thoughts? It will run when I switch to reserve!

Not sure what you mean ? It's supposed to run when you switch to reserve.

I had read on here somewhere, that after market petcock "non-honda" don't always have a reserve tube. so no switch over: RP.

If you paid someone to install a new OEM petcock and reserve doesn't work, I'd say "take it back..."
If you don't like to work on your bike, taking the tank off would probably be a drag, but if you do, there's good documentation here (search the tech board and look on shoptalk) about the whole deal, what the inside of the petcock looks like, what the alternatives are...

They have a reserve, just a shorter tube than OEM so less reserve available. On reserve, fuel is drawn from the bottom of the tube so the shorter the tube, the less fuel left before it stops pulling from the top of the tube.

That's right. Wpjaze, do you know how the reserve is supposed to work? If there is any gas in the tank, from a few drops to full, the reserve position will allow the bike to run, because it is taking gas from the bottom of the tank.

Had new petcock installed for maintenance...old one would come on with a gallon left...new one never comes on . And I know you can run the tank thru the reserve switch. I thought when I bought petcock it was original equipment...maybe not!

Was the operating knob installed wrong? Remove the knob, use two fingers to adjust the petcock to a known position. Install knob in that position.

There's only one petcock that looks like the OEM. If it is brand new one it should be all clean and shiny. Who installed it? If It's mis aligned and the switch can't click into the settings, it could be on reserve all the time.

Remove the control knob, set the petcock in the center manually. Then reattach the knob with it pointing forward to match the petcock and see if that fixes it. I don't recall for sure, but I don't think the knob will attach but one way, guess it could be forced on. If it has been forced on, the end of the knob that screws on to the petcock most likely will be cracked.

Because you have to manually switch it, it does not come on by itself. Inquiring mimes want to know.
