I just pulled the shocks and found the bushings that I replaced last year are worn and cracked.
The originals lasted 14 years. The new bushings have metal sleeves in them but only on the bottom.
Is it a lack of these sleeves on the top that caused the problem?  Did I just get a bad set?
Looking in the tech pages I found a suggestion to use VTX 1800 bushings ( better material)
Should I be looking for a particular brand or just order the VTX bushings?

 Thanks for any advice.

Upper bushing are the ones that take a beating.  Lowers not too much.  Uppers do NOT have metal sleeves, only lowers.  The OEM bushings were black rubber, the replacement recommended is the VTX bushings that are a green poly type bushing, much better.   As indicated, Gary's bushings had a failed batch.  I never had any, but s few of my friends did and they desinigrated on them supposedly.  You will do well to get the VTX recommended ones.

Thanks for the links and the advice.  I'd order them right away but I start looking at those links and I might find something else to order. Wink

These are the Rear shock bushings I put in my bike--Redeye.  They're better than OEM I think. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rear-Shock-Bushings-similar-to-52489-MW3-305-Fit-Honda-Valkyrie-97-03-GL1500C-/231613987915?fits=Make%3AHonda%7CModel%3AValkyrie+1500&hash=item35ed44fc4b&vxp=mtr

Machine yourself a couple of metal sleeves about  .020 thickness and your upper bushings will last a long long time... crazy2 crazy2

I know you have 100,000 miles on your Valk. Are you still running your original shocks?

The shocks are the originals and they have 141,000 miles on them.  There are some bumps out there that send a "shock" to the back.  Wouldn't hurt to consider replacing them.

From the description on that ebay page:

"What is this item worth?
There are other sites that will charge $15.28 for this exact same kit, from the exact same manufacturer.  This site charges sellers a commission for sales, so the price is higher here."

I guess they want customers to search out other places to buy the bushings?

Oh well, you can buy it directly from redeye if you want to, but they're shipping is probably more than two bucks.  My point is they're good bushings whether you pay $17 or $15.28. Grin

What they are saying is that eBay charges a listing and selling fee and he has to add that to the price, which he inflated to help drive you to his original website I believe, so you can buy em there cheaper.  That's my take on it.......
