Author Topic: Idles fine but wants to die above 3000 rpm???  (Read 1001 times)

I posted a while back when my bike hydro locked and got some great information from you guys. I am experiencing a new issue and was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Last weekend I rode just over 300 miles, bike ran great. Well I got it out last night and it fired right up so I took off and no even a mile up the road it started sputtering and died. So I got her back home and checked basic things and put it away for the night. So today I got her out and she idles fine but seems to be starving of gas at 3000 rpm. I took the tank off and took the petcock apart and clean as a whistle. So I thought well maybe it's bad gas. So I emptied the tank and put it all back together and put 2 gallons of fresh gas in her. Same issue. Starts up and idles fine but at 3000rpm it wants to cut out and the rpms drop??? I had the carbs serviced and rebuilt 3 months ago so I don't believe that's the issue. Has anyone experienced this or have an idea of what's going on?? Thanks ahead of time for any input on this issue!

Vacuum lines? Pinched fuel line?  Open the gas tank lid and see if it still does it riding while lid is open.

What Bighead said. Also make sure gas is running downhill to the carbs. If you changed the OEM line and made it a shade longer to make it easier to reconnect, you probably have an upward angle in the line and that will stave our Large Ladies since they are gravity feed. Also some inline fuel filters seem to starve the Girls if you added one.

Thanks for the reply Bighead. I checked the fuel line it's completely fine. I checked the vacuum lines I can see and they are fine. I will try riding it with the gas cap open tomorrow and see what happens. I also checked the gas tank vent line and it's fine.

Crackerborn I did have the gas line replaced when the carbs were rebuilt. I will check that and let you know. I do not have an inline fuel filter so that's a non issue. Thanks

petcock diaphragm, use an eye piece look closely at the center area, even push the nipple outward. u are looking to see if the rubber coating is gone and the underlying material can be see. If so replace, it is leaking vacuum and preventing full continuous fuel flow.

CA I had a brand new petcock put on when the carbs were done but I will check it anyways. Thanks

Also check the choke and make sure all carbs come back to the throttle stops and one is not pulling more air than the others. The linkage between the carbs can slip and allow one carb to  not synchronize with the others essentially holding one open slightly.

I've been going to stay out because I think the problem has been answered. I too believe it is nothing more than a fuel delivery issue such as what has been said, bad petcock diaphram, vacuum line, kinked vent or fuel line. usually the problem is the vent when the fuel tank has just been installed.
If the problem turns out to be the petcock, I recommend the Pingel.

I had the same problem. The carbs on the left side developed granules from the dried up fuel. Pulled the carbs and a few fast jets were clogged. Cleaned it up and all was good cooldude
