Went to go for a ride after the bike has sat for awhile. Idles great, but when I get past 1/3 throttle the bike runs like it is almost out of gas on the right, and like its dead on the left. I put in a can of sea form and topped of the gas, but still doing the same thins. I checked that the choke linkage is working correctly, cycled the fuel selector several times, no go. Tapped the carbs to see if it was a stuck float, but it would seem that that does not fit the symptoms. I've put a few miles trying to see if it would resolve, but no such luck. I tried different gears at different speeds, but it seem to screw up going past 1/3 throttle. Again, the right side runs rough when I open it up, and the left sounds like it goes dead. I do not smell gas like it was flooded. It starts great, idles smooth.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Vacuum line from intake #6 to petcock. Check all other vacuum lines/plugs. Draw vacuum on petcock, to see if it holds. If your starving for fuel, which it sounds like it is, it almost always is petcock, and/or it's assorted hardware. It could be carbs, but, in this case I doubt it. Just have to start somewhere, and vacuum is usually the culprit cooldude

Wow, I expected a cool pic or a link to one  Roll Eyes

Try opening the gas cap when it happens.  Maybe, somehow, the vent hose is clogged.

Yeah I think someone took over Sparky`s computer. Grin
If the 2 excellent suggestions you have already don`t work, it might be time to take the carbs off and clean them.

Yep, sounds like clogged jets. Pick up a bottle of barrymans b-12 chemtool. I find it works better than seafoam. If that does not solve it then it's time for a good carb cleaning.

Have to agree.  After re-reading the original post, the vent line clogg would take time to happen.  B-12 works better than seafoam, in my experience, also.

Maybe changing the slow jets to 38's is an option.

I know some state that will promote carbon build up, but I'd rather that then carb maintenance every time I forget to treat the gas.

How long before carbon build up is an issue?

Gave in and took to stealer. They did card rebuild, O-rings, gaskets. It must have been a float problem.

Runs like a champ. ONLY $1,200 bucks... (glad gas is cheap or I'd have to push it around after that hit.....)

Thanks for the help folks.

I've had #38 slow jets in my carbs for years, 7-8 at least. Never any problem with carbon build up, you just don't open the pilot jets as far. I set mine just below 2 turns out, some set them at 1 3/4 turns out.  No reason for any build up if it's not running rich.

Agreed, I'm running 38 slows in all my Valk's.  Did the first around the same time, 7-8 years ago.  I set my pilots at 1 3/4.

I don't know if I've got any carbon build up, never had the bike apart enough to see, nor have I ever needed to look.

Just remember some mentioning here, about that possible issue when using 38's.

Sparky, glad you got your bike running right.  Did the Mech give you any specific reason?

glad you got it up and running like new again.  It better at 1200 smackers.  GEESH!

I can't believe 1200 is reasonable even at say 100 bucks per hour, most of what they did was labor, not parts.  So,  a 'certified' Honda mechanic manual states it take over 10 hours to rebuild the carbs, etc.???  I'd like to see the Honda repair manual on labor time to do such.
