Believe me, I understand it completely. I recall a number of years ago, our manager came through the office handing out a directive from Tallahassee on a new procedure, that was right after 8:00am when the office opened. Two hours later, he came through and picked up all the prior directives saying it had been superceded and the new procedure would be coming down shortly. Shortly turned out to be about three weeks later, and he comes through the office handing out the sheets with the new procedure. The new procedure.....exactly the same method we had been using all along. But we were directed to no longer use the old procedure as of that date. So, just for fun I called the director's office and suggested nothing had changed. He got all up in the air over the fact an underling would question him, and told me I was dead wrong. So again just for fun, I copied both the old and new and mailed them to him. Each had an effective date printed on it so there was no mistaking their issue. He apparently called our manager and "discussed" how to keep his employees in line. When it was relayed to me we both had a chuckle over it, but it was suggested to not do it again.
Later in my career, I got into a "discussion" with some hotshot out of Tally re. changes in how to close an audit file. The new instructions printed both sides were nearly 50 pages long and applied to only one particular form. The form was one page long. I flat out told the jerk(not the director this time) that if it took 50 pages of instructions to tell you how to fill out a form, then something is wrong with either the form.....or the author. Then added "and there's nothing wrong with the form" so I guess he took it that I meant him. He was right!
I probably could have gone a lot farther up the ladder in my 30 yrs. if I kept my mouth shut. Not one of my strong suits.
