Last week I cranked up my 98 standard and rode her to work. The clutch lever would not affect the clutch until the last quarter inch before hitting the handle bar. Riding home after work was the same. I had a traffic light at the top of a hill where that I turn. I tried to down shift and could only get to fourth. I limped her home. My clutch has not given me any issues at all. My fluids are good. I changed them last spring. I have no leaks. The clutch lever was sloppy. After researching similar issues on here I ordered the wide blade levers, new pivot bolts and the new brass bushing. The old lever was worn. The push rod that sets in the brass bushing came out. Is it lust held in my compression with the brass bushing? I installed the new parts today. Then I started the bike, with the clutch lever pulled in, and clicked her into first gear. The bike died. ARGH !!!! I cannot get the clutch to engage. She has 36k miles. Any ideas guys?

If your personalized picture is a picture of you, I would definitely suspect the dampner rivets.
Not judging you, I like the picture, but that's the kind of action that causes the rivets to go.
I learned that the hard way.

I never pull wheelies and my rivets went at 41k miles. I have a '98 also and was told there was a bad batch of damper plates provided to Honda, same for the GW1500. search the threads for what to do to replace the damper plate and the two clutch plates on either side. and there are some '98s out there with over 100k on the org clutch.

Probably the first thing to do is bleed the clutch to remove any air.

Yes, bleed the clutch. Your symptoms do NOT sound like sheared damper rivets. When the rivets shear you can't pull the lever to the grip as it hits a hard stop.

After installing the parts, did you get normal fluid resistance when you pulled in the clutch, or did it just sink to the grip? Air in the line will feel spongy. By chance, was the kickstand down when you dropped it into gear? Don't ask me how I know . . .

Today I was at work sitting at my desk on a conference call. The call got boring so I pulled out my phone and checked this site. I read all of the opinions. The idea that someone would have tried to put their Valk in gear with the kick stand down made me laugh. ....... Then I stopped laughing. I think that I had the stand up. surely I had enough sense to have the kick stand up. Did I have the kick stand up?!! So..... as soon as I got home I Did put the kick stand up and clicked into first gear. Wallah!!! Apparently I had my head up my tailpipe. I thank you all for allowing me to prove that I am an idiot. I appreciate you all and I continue to learn from you all. Thank you.

I deserve that. The initial problem was the lever and brass bushing. Thank you all.

When we get together on a ride and someone has a problem-you WILL have more help than you can imagine. Seen it more than once at the 4 Inzanes I've been to. RIDE SAFE.
