Twice now in the last 6 months I have been out riding my 97. After a 15-20 minute drive I stop for a few minutes. When I start up and  take of as normal I get a clunk clunk clunk noise and vibration similar to a bad u-joint. The first time it went away after stopping checking things out for any thing stuck in between the tires and such and restarting. It completely went away?? The second time yesterday same scenario. This time I slowly rode in a figure eight and it went away? Guess I need to do a tear down to see what's going on. Hate to if anyone else has had the same problem and drive train was not the problem. Last thing done mechanically was new brake pads about a year ago. I have had u-joints go out in the past with a car and those did not revert to normal, ever, after making a noise or rattling sound. And by normal I mean everything feels 100% no vibration no clunks nothing!

Up-Date.

Finally got a u-joint as that seemed the consensus.  Took the bags off, pulled the wheel and place it against the wall. Noticed a powder at the bottom of the wheel...Looked closer and discovered my composite dampers, which I got from Gary were disintegrated !! Only powder and the metal centers were left. I thought I had bought these after the one bad batch had been fixed. Anyone still running with Gary's dampers beware. Luckily I had saved my originals which were almost new and in good shape. So now I'm like almost new.  Wink

What it looked like: and yes I noticed over the years my driveline slap was increasing slowly.

Before a joint goes, it can flop in and out of position. My bet is you need a U joint.

Check the Florida board. John Schmidt just had a similar noise. Bushing on the pin on the caliper assembly was gone.

Read about Stuffys problem. His seemed to come when hitting bumps. Mine is simply cranking the girl up after sitting for a few minutes and restarting. No bumps included. Guess if a u-joint can go in and out of position and stay in correct position for a long time and over a thousand miles of start and stops that must be it.

One of my muffler cover clamps went bad and got bent in such
a way that a mysterious metallic sound would be made
whenever I'd first get on the bike... I kept trying to
find fault with the kickstand spring until I finally found
the bent muffler cover clamp...

Hum perhaps although I recall when this happens it feels kind of like riding on a square wheel or a flat if you will.

Good, glad it turned out to be an easy fix. I like easy. I have a set of Gary's dampers also, I'll figure out some other use for them.

I have 2 sets of dampeners from Gary, purchased the year before and the year he passed away. Waiting till they are needed (picked up in person when I drove threw his town).

I suppose when I use them, they will need to be inspected every time the rear tire gets replaced or the 10K miles maintenance.

Fla Jim,
They look good for a couple more miles Wink
Kidding you, mine were worse than that, just a pile of dust and chunks. Same supplier.
When I put the new OEM rubber back in it was wonderful, felt like a new bike.

Same problem, same supplier, same results posted awhile back had pics. Glad you found it, I had dust and chunks so I had a pretty good idea what it was.
