Does it harm plastic or rubber parts such as used on the carbs?  Looks like I may have to go over the carbs on my 1200 project bike, not looking forward to pulling them but I've tried different additives with no real change.

Which one? There are several listed on the Rust-Oleum site: http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/krud-kutter/
Choose one, then search for the MSDS, which should list the effects and chemistry.

The MSDS says the parts wash/degreaser is made of trisodium phosphate and sodium metasilicate. Both of which are easily purchased. The MSDS also states that, on average, they are both about 1.75% by weight of product.

So if you want to roll your own then purchase 10 pounds of  sodium metasilicate on eBay for about $28 which will make 67 gallons of finished product. Then buy a one or two 4.5# boxes of trisodium phosphate (TSP from about any hardware or box store) for around $18 each. Two boxes will make 60 gallons of product.

Add 2.5 ounces each of the two ingredients to 1 gallon of water you'll be in business for $1.02 per gallon.

You can buy smaller amounts of the two ingredients but they'll cost more per pound than stated above.

OH! And it's safe for plastics!
