I have an IS that has sat for 3 years that I'm trying to get back on the road.  If the carbs need to come off for cleaning, what should that cost?  I was quoted $420 for this (1 hour per carb @ $70 per hour).  Is this in line?

Thanx

That would be cheap does that include removing them from the bike or you pulling them and bringing them to the shop. I just pulled mine  and they are on my work bench waiting for new slow jets. Not that hard to pull couple of hours to remove.

About 3 years ago I was quoted $75/hr per carb, so yes that is probably on the low side. Keep in mind that is only an estimate as there is always the possibility of additional parts & labor depending on what they run into.

If they know what they are doing, that's cheap. If they don't, anything you pay is too much.

I got all the service records when I got my Valk.  It was over $500 for a shop to clean the tank, pull and clean the cabs.

If you are some what mechanically inclined while involved it IS doable. I know one of the best people here for carb work BUT he lives in Tulsa Ok. He also has a new ultra sonic cleaner that is working gang busters. MAYBE pull carbs and send them to him for the internals. P M him for yuks and giggles. Oh-he goes by Atticrat on this here forum. On the plus side-when he's done with the cabs-they ARE right. Ask my brother-da prez-he has a set redone by Atticrat. And THEN he digisynced them-and my I/S was digisynced-well digisync is now  plug for BonS-again a board ember and board sponsor. This post should give you a few options to mull over!  2funny Believe Atticrats thing about airwings has his Phone number included. RIDE SAFE.

$420.00  Holy smokes!!  I need to raise my price.

I know Bob in Tulsa and he does an awesome job.  I pull them off the bike, take them apart, so each one, install new carb kits, put carbs back together, install back in bike, and synch carbs.  I hate asking for money but having five kids my time is worth something more than I thought before the kids.  I know that between soaking the carbs for 3 hrs it takes 6 hrs in the bath and about an hour per carb sounds about right.

I had mine done by Attic Rat. He takes a lot more time then an hour per carb. You might want to check with him,  he is higher,  but really does a great job. I won't say what he does, but e mail him and he will tell you. He is a member

Does the bike start and run? Fresh gas?

If so, try the cheaper way first. Carb cleaner in fresh gas, high strength. Ask more if it runs. I would rather spend $10 on carb cleaner that will/might get it running after a season of riding, instead of what should cost more than $500 to do, more if you don't remove the carbs yourself.

Thanx for the responses, much appreciated.  I haven't got the tank back yet so today I pulled the plugs and sprayed in some WD40 and turned it over several times to ensure it wasn't locked.  I put in the new battery and connected a temporary fuel tank and it fired up and ran after about 10 seconds on the starter.  After about 15 seconds it smoothed out and ran on all cylinders.  I didn't expect that.

Was that price including parts? No mention of that.

When I did my carbs a couple of years ago I used a youtube video that really helped. That and patience. G/L
