Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Done it 2 yrs ago without the pot. I notce a difference. Lost a few mpg when I removed my trigger wheel. I'd do it again.  Evil

Do you have to remove your trigger wheel when you do this mod?

You should remove an advance trigger wheel if doing this mod.  I removed a 6 degree wheel to do the ECT mod.  Comparing the two, my overall milage dropped with the ECT and my bikle idles better and has more mid-range power with the advance wheel.  After trying the ECT for four months I removed it and re-installed the 6 degree wheel.

I did this mod 3 years ago.
I prefer it over an advanced trigger wheel for several reasons.

Note: Potentiometer installed
        Clutch switch override installed.

1. I like the ECT mod because I can manually either dial it down or shut it down.
2. With the clutch switch override the ECT advance disengages when the clutch switch is activated when the tranny is in gear. Good    for stop & go traffic jams and the like.

It has worked flawlessly.
The one odd thing is, I don't know why this happens, mine can be used to help with warm ups in lieu of the enricher. I get, if it's turned on with the pot, 4-500rpm's assistance at cold start. It disengages on it's own when in neutral at about 140* just warming in the garage. Anyone know why?

Did the same thing. Much happier with the 6 degree trigger. That what great about this bike. Some like the ECT and some don't.

Very strange, it should have no effect until the bike is warmed up.  The ECT just causes the cold advance to stay on after warm up.

Apparently, my I/S ICM installed in my Tourer doesn't provide the OE cold advance. Either it's a faulty ICM or something about my ECT tie-in is conflicting.
I dunno, I followed BluValks wiring to a tee at all points of the mod.

My 98 standard has the simple ECT mod.
My 2K I/S has a 4 degree Air Lake trigger wheel.

IMHO,.....I prefer the simple ECT mod.

When you say "simple", that's the one without the adjuster, correct? So you would be at 10 degrees advance all the time (up to the cut out)?

"if it's turned on with the pot"?

Do you, by chance, have a pot that switches/clicks off when fully CCW?  If you do, that would disable the ECT when in the off position (no cold advance).  Turning it on with any advance at all would let the normal ECT resistance be "seen" by the ICM.

If not, you have an interesting situation.  It can be resolved.  But, I don't know if it is worth it to you when it seems to be working okay, otherwise.  If you are the curious type, checks can be made and answers can be found ...

Yes, it's a switched pot. Off provides no advance with warm up.
On provides cold advance a few minutes [delayed] into warmup. Advance backs off on it's own at about 140* while in neutral warming up.

So apparently a switched pot, in the Off position, overrides the ICM cold advance completely at cold start?

Thanks BlueValk
