Hello,

I may need to have some work done on my 1998 Valkyrie's transmission. I am looking for a mechanic. I am will to travel or ship bike.

The bike up-shifts hard into 2nd like a gear is damaged. I have already ruled out the driveshaft/rear drive assembly. This is a problem inside the transmission. I need someone with experience with the internals of the trans.

Thanks,
Iceman

As suggested to you already, post what the bike is/isn't doing that's abnormal. Many on here will try to help you out

I'll take the first guess: driveshaft and pinion cup splines worn out..

If it's a driveline issue, like driveshaft/pinion cup, etc... pretty easy fix. I can help you out with that stuff, just have to bring it up to Youngstown for an afternoon.

Describe what it's doing...

What do you mean by hard? It takes more force, or doesn't want to go into gear?

I know I had to be forceful when upshifting into 2 from 1st, especially when cold. Down shifting was fine.

I believe some have found moving the shift gear one tooth (up or down, I don't remember) makes shifting easier.

This is normal. So since the bike is new to you, as long as it works, drive it and see how it behaves. I don't mean take it for a ride across the country, ride it around town and enjoy.

The other thing for a new owner is how the carb works. Turn it on till it stops, then force it another 1/4 turn. You're moving 6 carbs, so it takes force.

Iceman, are you new to the bike or just new to the board?

I don't think I've ever heard of a tranny going south.

Very rare, if at all.

Just ride it like you stole it.  These girls like it hard Roll Eyes

Gordon was taking about the choke/en ricer.  Newbies don't realize how far to push the lever down.

You might try putting upward pressure against the shifter before pulling in the clutch lever. Sometimes that helps---preloading the shifter.

It sounds like this might be your first Valkyrie . If so let me give you my opinion of the trans. It is without a doubt the clunkiest shifting bike I've owned in my 43 years of riding. Yamahas seem like butter compared , but it's a great bike and soon you'll get used to it. It just the nature of the beast.  Smiley Hopefully that's all it is. If you haven't done an oil change yet (or even if you have) try some full synthetic oil. I like the Mobil 1 20-50. But it doesn't get that cold here. Others will chime in, but any good synthetic will help a little. IMO.  cooldude

I have owned my 1998 Valkyrie since I purchased it new in 2000. I have looked into all of the suggestions. I am quite sure its an internal problem. That's why I am looking for someone skilled in the internals of the Valk.

Thanks to all the replies.
