I just recently went through the same thing. Make sure you take plenty of photos of how the cables were routed and how everything is connected. That way you can refer to the photos if you can't remember how to put it all back together. Might as well replace or clean your air filter since you need to remove the gas tank... it was a pain in the rear but I got r done. You can too.

After lubing and checking routing of throttle cables. Nothing worked, throttle still sticks when turned right all the way.
I've never changed a throttle cable(s). How big of a PIA is it? Not that it matters. Gremlins at work, worked fine before carb job now it doesn't!  crazy2

Pull and push.

Isn't it more like pull open/pull closed?

I just recently went through the same thing. Make sure you take plenty of photos of how the cables were routed and how everything is connected.

Easier way is remove one end, tie a strong string onto it, pull the cable out, the string follows the path. Untie the string and tie onto the new cable, then using the string, pull the cable back through the bike.

Repeat on the second cable.

Thought I broke a cable the other day..
Was going to work last Thursday, accelerating down the onramp at about 6:05 am at 70mph.  All of a sudden, nuttin.  Engine went right to idle, and I coasted to a stop on the side of the freeway, with cars and trucks zippin by at 75 mph.  Crap.

Figured a broke cable, so I sat there thinking.  Dang.  I'm 5 miles from home, 40 miles from work, I'm late, and the wife is in our commuter car in front of me.  It's gonna take at least an hour for AAA to get here.  Crap.  Crap.

Pushed the bike over to the right a bit more to get about 3' between me and traffic.  Then when I was getting off on the RIGHT side (away from the traffic) ... the grip came off in my hand... 2funny

Seems when I installed them, all the glue got pushed to the inner end.  And the glue joint just let loose.  Tossed the grip in the saddlebag and commenced the ride into work; albeit with a slightly cramped right hand...  Safety wired it on with some Target sourced Gorilla Glue, and all is well...

But riding in I was thinking those cables are almost 20 years old... its time. Roll Eyes
